Hotel(s) for move-in weekend

Hotels are booking up for move-in weekend. Hanes Mall was the closest I could get for 2 nights because orbitz and expedia were showing Saturday sold out.

Fortunately, I remembered that I have an old Marriott rewards membership. I was able to use that to book the Courtyard directly throught Marriott, even tho the other sites showed sell-outs.

I assumed that the freshmen parents would be long gone before the returning students arrived. Well, that might have been the case last year when my son was a freshman. But this year, freshmen arrive on Friday and the rest of us on Sunday. No wonder rooms are scarce; the two waves overlap.

Best of luck to anyone who has procrastinated, like me. :o

Just want to recommend the Hampton Suites out by the Hanes Mall. There is another Hampton a bit closer to Wake, up University Pkwy but it is more $$$. Both still have availability that weekend; the one by the mall runs about $225 (total) for Sat and Sun and the one near Wake is about $293. I have stayed at several hotels in Winston Salem including the Holiday Inn (nothing else available), Residence Inn, Courtyard Marriott, downtown Marriott, Fairfield Inn and Hampton. The Hampton is by far the cleanest, most comfortable hotel and the staff is really lovely. They give a hot breakfast, have a pool and the beds are great. Parking is secure and I don’t always feel that way with the hotels near the university I am sorry to say. Staying out by the mall isn’t really that bad, I just zip up Silas Creek Pkwy. From what I have heard the Hampton closer to school is just as nice as the Hanes Mall location and they probably get a bit more $$$ being closer to school. I hate move in day as the campus is mobbed and parking is a nightmare so it is nice to go back to a comfortable hotel room.

I stayed at the Hampton up off University at move out and it is very nice, too. At move in we will be staying elsewhere because the dog is coming with us = should be interesting!!! It seems like yesterday we were stuck in a long line of traffic (in the rain) for freshman move in. This year went way too fast!!
