I think my chances are pretty slim, but its so hard to raise your SAT grade when the english curriculum here is rubbish!
any suggestions?

actually, i think you have a shot =] your ECs are pretty impressive and living in kuwait sounds cool. do you have any hospitality experience though? mayb ethe marketing company had hotels/restaurants as clients, etc? Obviously, your SAT score is a little low, but if you raise it above a 1800, i think you have a decent shot =] good luck

actually, the marketing company's clients were mostly restaurants so there was some interaction with restaurants such as planning and creating public advertisements and etc. The Sheraton also came for some buisness with the company i worked for but i wasn't directly involved with what they did.

afchang- I only tried white gummy once. It was kind of too "skittle-like" tasting for me..or too sugary at least. Do you have any idea what they put in it? I used to think gummy bears cause of the name of it...but I have no clue.....

i know some major ingredients include peach, soy milk, and mangos.

other secret items include: Red Gummi Bear, Green Gummi Bear, Raspberry Dreamin', Pineapple Dreamin', Sourpatch Kid, Tropical Tango, Pacific Passion, Berry Depressing, Now and Later, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Apple Pie, Fruity Pebbles, Rainbow Sherbet, Strawberry Shortcake, Push Pop, Skittles, Andres' Surprise, and Lemonade Lightnin'.

some stores will only make them if you know the ingredients. wikipedia used to have the recipes for the items but now they dont anymore =(

hey, just curious, for ED applicants, what did you guys write about in your hotel school supplement, if you dont mind sharing =D

since our apps are all in...haha. jaykay. i woudl have shared anyway. mmm. i wrote about my job at a restaurant the "rush" of Friday nights. and then how I've traveled since I was a toddler, love stayin in hotels, etc etc. mmm. then about my interest in foods and my "business" of specially designed cakes and how this ties into Cornell's AOS degree program with the Culinary institute of america. then wrapped it up with reading a hotelie's blog and how i knew cornell was for me. SOUNDS CHEESY HUH? CRAP. -___-

OH! i love reading that blog! "oh no she didn't" right?

haha, i started off the essay with "my life is one huge trig function". then, i went off into talking about how i grew up in my parents' clothing factory, leading into my stay at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. After relating all of that to trigonometry, i ended the essay with something REALLY cheesy. "I'm sine squared and the School of Hotel Administration is cosine squared. And according to the Pythagorean theorem, that makes us one!"

hahhha nice math pun! It would be a good pick up line too. Hahhaa

I wrote about my experience working in the banquets and housekeeping departments at Statler. I used tons of "hotelie" terms, so hopefully that will help. =D

I also tied it up at the end with a special Hotel School program like password, but with SLDP (Statler Leadership Development Program), and how I really want to be a part of it, and how it'll advance my career in/ understanding of the hospitality industry.

dang! thats what i forgot! i knew i shouldve put in a hotel program! 500 words is way too little, even for being concise!

hey guys,
i know cornell & every other college looks a lot at an applicant's ECs. however, i have some issues:

my country's education system splits our high school years, so technically, we're only in high school for 2 years. and naturally i've only accumulated like 100 hours of community service hours in 2 years.
furthermore, our strict curriculum works in such a away that if you're in sports, most of your time is spent training, leaving us with little time to join clubs etc unless you skip trainings all the time.
thirdly, i understand that having work experience is really an integral part of the criteria for admission into SHA, however, most students in my country are unable to work during vacations because our education system finds it such a joy to schedule examinations the day after vacations end. so... i'm without an resume & the only experience i have that is remotely related to the hospitality & tourism industry is volunteering at the zoo for 2 days =/ however, i have a job interview lined up straight after my national examinations are over & that's before i submit in my app & hopefully, the interview.

would getting a job right before my interview maybe increase my chances? & would the lack of quantity of ECs hinder my app? also, is it relatively easy to transfer to cornell? cos i'm thinking of doing that if i'm unable to make it to cornell, boston or purdue for freshman year.

thanks in advanced!

hey guys,
I really want to apply to the school of hotel management. however, i fear that my ec's and experiences have all to do with international affairs. should I apply to the school of hotel managements with my profile? or should i apply to the college of arts language and sciences?

I'm applying regular decision to Cornell

The thing I feel that could hurt me is I took all my AP's in my senior year, so I dont have any AP scores yet, but I will have that explained, because I studied abroad, when I came to America, I had to take certain required classes before I could take AP, so I couldnt take AP's before this. I twas just NOT POSSIBLE. But I have a letter explaining that from the counsellor.
If I write some good essays do I have a chance?
I have started a clothes charity in collaboration with the local IKEA to raise winter clothes for Burmese/African refugees
I have arranged a rally about Animal Rights in the town square thingy and it will happen in about two or three weeks, before I apply, and it may actually recieve some news attention
I go to an underrepresented suburban school. In fact, nobody from my school has been to Cornell i think in the last 15-20 years. and this year, nobody except me is applying to Ivy's at all.

theres nothing related to the hospitality field not even business.. like me i have nothing related to hospitality due to some reasons and i told my interview the reasons also. but i have alot of business oriented classes... so im not sure what your chances are.

im in a similar position. my parents wont allow me to have a job and so i cannot get any "real" experience. but i am actively involved with the Future Business Leaders of America and hold high positions and have earned several awards/recognitions...which i talked about with my interviewer

These are the 4 who applied early in 2006 and were accepted:
