Hotel School Applicants HERE

I applied ED to the Hotel School. I am just going insane with anxiety concerning my application. I just wanted to see who else applied. Plus, I basically know everything there is to know about the Hotel School (Course Codes, Teacher names, etc...) and would be very willing to advise people.

yeah i applied ed too. Im really scared. I feel like my lack of experience is whats gonna kill me. I have loads of leadership, good grades, high test scores, but no hotel or restaurant experience. i heard that 80% of freshmen at the hotel school have hotel experience, so i doubt ill get in...

My resume is basically the opposite of yours. haha I have the experience, the drive, commitment, and passion, but my Freshmen and Sophmore year put my Cumulative in the garbage. Anyway, when was your interview?

I applied early as well. I had my interview in mid October.

Is there any questions anyone has on the Hotel School? Including interviewing and their application? I would be glad to offer any advice to anyone.

Even though I'm not applying to Hotel School (I'm applying to ILR), I've always wondered how they prove that you have the experience? Do they ask for a recommendation from the managament at the hotel or restaraunt? I ask this b/c, say you worked at the establishment for a long time but left on bad terms...that would pretty much screw your admissions chances, wouldn't it?

To prove experience, you would list all relavant Hospitality related activities and, (if possible) ask a person who could speak to strengths you displayed at your job. Also, it would be very wise to expand on these jobs and experiences in your essay and interview. Good Luck with ILR

I applied ED as well. My GPA and SAT scores are decent, but I have work experience in a hotel and a pretty good interview. My essay was good (I talked a lot about service). I'm so nervous. I really hope I can get in. Good luck to everybody else.

Ya guys. Good luck to everyone and may we all be able to someday wander the halls of the SHA.

good luck to you all. I'm hoping to apply ED next year. How was the interview? Super intense or was it more laid back?

same with password, im looking to apply ED next year...(if, ED is still AVAILABLE)

what are some of your hints? or things you totally regretted not doing/doing etc...

yeah, i hope Ed is still there. cuase cornell is definately my top choice, even though I need fin. aid.

Hmmmm. I guess the only thing that I actually regret is not getting better grades in freshmen year and not having a hotel job earlier. If you are in your Junior year, I highly reccomend going to the Summer Colllege, LTMC, based in the Hotel School. You get to know a LOT about the SHA, you get to ask the teachers to write reccomendations, and I am even in personal contact with the Associate Director of Admissions for SHA! As far as the interview, It all depends on who you get. While some teachers are very harsh and intimidating, there are many who make the interview a positive experience for everyone. Good Luck to everyone.

ach44, you seem like you have a very high chance of getting the admission.
I feel so...alienated..!?
I know nobody at the hotel school, and I didn't go to the summer school, didn't have more than one month of intern at hotel..
my essay doesn't talk a lot about service..y.y
Okay, so I'll have to do a SUper Duper job at the interview;
would you give me some tips on the interview?
I know I have to prepare questions, show great motivation for the hospitality industry, and look professional. If you have any tips other than these, tell me.
and by the way, how can I look professional?
(this is like, the hardest part for me. I'm a normal high school student! I might "dress" professionally, but how can I 'sound' or 'act' professionally??)

for your interview, just be ready to tell the interviewer what your goals in the future are, and why you would like to attend the Cornell hotel school and what you can bring to the community.. you know stuff like that. Be ready to talk about experience and such as well as yourself and your academic career

on looking profession, (i don't know your gender ahah) but if ur a guy, wear a suit and tie and if your a girl wear a nice pants suit. don't look too over the top, but just as you would if you worked in an office everyday. not to much makeup and very conservative

I am flattered that you feel that I have a good chance and appreciate it very much. Please don't feel alienated, if I did get in, I would be one of the people who get in purely because of passion for Hotels and dedication to the Hotel School. My Cumulative GPA is probably one of the worst who is even applying (Freshmen year) and my SAT scores are a Standard Deviation above the normal. I wish that GPA could only be Junior year!
As for the interview, I am about to give away all my secrets and knowledge (Excatly what I did). First off, what I feel is most important, is showing knowledge of the Hotel School (Make sure to note the things they are most proud of (Beck Center, Binenkorb Lab, Statler, most important FACULTY). The interviewers will love you if your really talk up a storm about the Hotel School. They will ask you a trick question*** "If you are not accepted to the Hotel School, what are your plans?" This may look like an innocent question trying to find out more about you, but in reality they are weighing your dedication to the Hotel Industry. Make sure that you tell them that you are applying to other school with Hotel/Hospitality programs. e.g. BU, UNLV, Penn State, RIT, Delaware. Also be prepared to discuss what got you into Hotels and what you are doing know to pursue them. Everything else, just act naturally and try to seem enthusiastic about telling them anything and everything about yourself. They also asked me what I would change about my school. I already mentioned this, but go to the Hotel School website and spend as much time as you need finding as much out as you can about it***. This is important, Trust Me. One thing that I did naturally but may come in handy is, be modest about yourself. Do not advertise yourself, try and let them know you understand that it is their decision. If that makes any sense.
On appearing professional, as snappleyum said, I do not know your gender. Being a male, I will tell you what I wore. Khaki dress pants, white French Cuff shirt, Red Tie, no Jacket. Females should try to be as Conservative as possible, like snappleyum said. Meaning, dont try and "look" cute or put emphasis on physical attributes. Something like bringing your best purse will not help you. Also do not say anything in the interview that you and your friends would talk about or find funny. Make an e-mail address other than any "wierd words" or band names etc. Be sure to ask for their card, ask what class they teach, and finally remember to write a letter and Mail it (not handwritten), you can also e-mail them giving an abbreviated thank-you. Try to visit a class if you can. When sitting in 180 Statler Hall, ask Reid (@ the desk) for a Hotel School catalogue and read it as fast as you can.
That's it. That is what I know. I am riduculous in that I probably went overboard with a lot of things, but that is just my nature and it the only person that it benefited was me, not the interview. As you can see, it is in my nature to help people, even if it may end up being a detrament to myself. There is one thing I request of anyone who reads this post, please do not apply to the Hotel School if it is not where you want to be. If you can't seriously see yourself living your life for the well-being of others, the SHA is not right for you. Thanks and good luck!

By the way, I am a female and I'm doing an off-campus interview.

of course! no prob, and good luck!

i hope we meet too! hahaha december 15th AHHH!
