Hotel school, but non-hotel careers?

Hi everyone,

I'm in Arts and Sciences, and am really interested in pursuing a career in business after graduation. While I really like my classes etc., I think that a lot of the requirements are too...well, liberal artsy for my tastes. I'm good at writing, but have no interest really in deep poetic thought or sciences--so, a lot of the distribution requirements in CAS really don't appeal to me that much. I'm keenly interested in taking teamwork-based classes like management, marketing, operations, and technologies in a business environment etc.

So, in that sense, a switch into Hotel from CAS appeals to me. However, to be honest...I'm just not sold on the idea of doing hospitality for the rest of my life. I've looked over the hotel courses required, and love the classes they have to take, but I just don't want to be cornered into hospitality.

So, my question: do you know of any hotelies, from personal experience, that have graduated and are pursuing non-hospitality related careers? i've looked over the alumni reports, etc. and I see the occasional "retail" or "e-commerce" jobs attained...have you heard or know of any anecdotes of people graduating from hotel and doing other sorts of people-focused business? maybe something tech related?

Thanks!

I have heard of lots of people going into random parts of the market. One of the Dean’s lectuerers worked at an insurance company and a nonprofit, yet went to the hotel school and explained how what he learned related to his other jobs. He also did some work in the hospitality industry.
In addition, I have heard of lots of people going into investment banking, real estate, etc.
Hotel school is all about working in teams and working with people - in that sense, I think you will probs love it.
Also, if you really like all the required hotelie classes, maybe you should consider a career in the industry?
When I was first thinking about coming here, my parents were really worried about how limiting that type of degree would be. Most of my teachers and friends at school didn’t get it either. After just spending a few weeks talking and learning about the school, we realized the vast world of opportunities within the hospitality industry.
In my opinion, you should talk to your advisor and talk to some of the advisors at the hotel school. I hope this helps! I love being a hotelie and it sounds to me like you would love it too!

I know of 2 hotelies going into investment banking, one at CS and another at GS. I hired someone from the Hotel school to work in the finance (accounting) area at our firm. My nephew is applying to Hotel, and he wants to go into commercial real estate (Hotel has a minor in that).

Hotel school has many courses similar to AEM, but just more focused on hospitality - accounting, finance, marketing…

My daughter (A&S) has taken few courses at Hotel and AEM, she thought they were both very good.

Thanks so much for both of your opinions–I appreciate it! If anyone else has any other things to contribute, please go ahead. Thanks!
