Hotel School Question

mom and hanna,
the easy part of the college search process is university quality and reputation. the much harder part is program quality and reputation. this board is helpful toward that end. CPP like many cal states have many weaker programs. the better ones were noted above. that said, it really is too bad that california guidance counselors have so little regard for most of the CSU system. there are many treasures at all 23 campuses. one only needs to do the hard work of searching for the diamonds out there.

I wonder how many Ca guidance counselors could name all 23 campuses. We have a strong city college and a UC locally so I don't know if this has an impact on why more students aren't guided towards the CSU's.
You have made me aware that we should look at them more carefully. My jr son will be considering some CSU's, Monterey Bay, Sonoma and as a reach SLO. We hadn't thought of Pomona but we will look at what they have to offer.
Hanna-Sadly if my D makes a major change from Hotel Management it would be to a more liberal arts major. Till senior year she was set on philosophy.

I will report back on the Houston Program next week

OK.as promised here is a report on University of Houston. I was very impressed with the program and the caliber of some of the students we met. My DS sat in on a Business Ethics class (very smart and entertaining Professor...which one needs to be at 0830), then got to heard a speaker at a Lecture Series....the President of Four Seasons was there and was introduced to my DS...the CEO also spoke well of the Porgram, Spent the rest of the day touring the campus with an student from the Honors College (also in the Hotel Program).....she was very bright and very open about the school. this program rose dramatically on my son's List

Next Stop was UNLV. Tad larger program. The Dept Chair met with my ds and stressed that their "lab" (aka the Strip) was less than a mile from the classes. Since ds was just accepted there, I dont think the Dept chair had his transcrits to review before meeting him. UNLV's strenght is they are only school offering a 4 yr degree in Gaming. We sat in on a Hospitality 101 class....(at 11A)...students didnt seem overly engaged perhaps because this was a 3 hrs class...did campus tour on SAt....more impressed. The library at UNLV is HUGE/State of the Art/ and was being USED by students each time I was in there...when to BAsketball game and student spirit was high (which we had read elsewhere that UNLV was more a commuter school and thus no spirit).....depending on $$$ offered.UNLV is still option on son's list.
