Is it worth it to stay in Capstone? I am all about convenience and we will be tight on time. However, I do want S to see a little of Tuscaloosa. Is there a better choice? It would be nice to arrive and dump the car and all the luggage and just walk over to where we want to go since we have a bit of a drive in the am. Any recommendations for dinner in town? We are heading down at the end of this month.

What kind of cuisine were you looking for?

I would recommend looking through this thread as well:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/911775-good-food-youve-eaten-bama-off-campus.html

Ehh, it’s not really worth it IMHO. It’s on the far (far) side of campus, so it’s a 15 min walk from the core of campus anyway. I’d just stay at one of the many hotels in Tuscaloosa or Northport and drive over in the morning.

If you’re eating near campus, I’d recommend:
Waysider (great breakfast)
Archibalds, Dreamland, and Bottom Feeders (good BBQ)
DePalma’s (Italian cafe/restaurant)
Ryun Thai (great little Thai restaurant, on the Strip)

If you can stay at the Capstone for a decent price then I would opt for that.

It’s not exactly easy walking distance from the main part of campus, but the hotel does have a van service, so request that (call ahead and get details).

The hotel is located on the southeast side of campus, which is not super close to where you’ll likely be going for tours, etc.

As for eating…

Mellow Mushroom - for upscale pizza
DePalma’s for Italian
Bento’s for Japanese
Iguana Grill for Mexican
Full Moon BBQ
5 Guys for nicer burgers
Lone Star for steaks

I would LOVE to try out Capstone, but it’s always booked up for the dates I need!

^^^

That happens! Especially for game weekends. It books a year or so in advance! The campus area needs another nicer hotel close by. I wouldn’t be surprised if one goes in on the other side of the stadium…between the stadium and Downtown.

Now THAT would be prime real estate, M2k!

I’ve stayed at the Capstone both for our visit and for BB. Rooms aren’t remarkable but they are comfortable and the convenience is terrific. I don’t like to deal with parking, etc…and you can use the campus bus system to get closer to the Capstone if the 10 minute walk to the Ferg is too far. Next time we go (August) I do expect to rent a car and stay elsewhere but if you want convenience, the Capstone is it. You can also walk to Newk’s, the strip, etc… They are supposed to have a stay 10 times get the 11th free program which we signed up for but when I inquired about it, they didn’t know why I hadn’t received my ‘card’ so I don’t know if that program is working or not (We’ve stayed a total of 7 nights in the past 3 months.) The food in the restaurant isn’t bad, either and they let the CC group take over a couple of tables…

We stayed at the Wyndham Wingate for BB, and I must admit I DID like the part where they ask at check-in “hardwood, or carpet?” I’ve never been asked that before.

We went with hardwood.

As we arriving in the am from Memphis and heading right over for the tour we might opt for Capstone. Thanks for all the dinner recommendations. I think we should try bar b que, which we both love, but S usually requests japanese, so Bento sounds good. I will enquire about the van (If i don’t forget). I would like the walk, better to see more of the campus, but I’m sure it will be incredibly hot.

Get the dish called “Bento chicken!” Sooooooooooo good!

Full Moon looks a bit divey on the outside (it’s on McFarland) but it’s nice inside and has neat Bama memorabilia. It also has good desserts!

tell me about the bento chicken?

we leave for BB in the morning. : )

grabbed a room at hometown suites … it had all good reviews - except for one.

I am traveling this week and next so hopefully I’ll get a chance to put everything in order. Up packing now for tomorrow, ugh. Waiting to hear from Jami on schedule, I will contact her at the end of the week if I don’t hear. We are confirmed for the 12:45 tour. After 'bama dropping S off at Ole Miss for a month long summer program. Will have to pick up all the essentials at Target or Walmart down there, as it won’t all fly and we are connecting I think, another ugh.

Perhaps this will be a good choice for parents and visiting potential students in years to come.

For great dining, check out “The Landing” on the Black Warrior River, in Northport, roughly across the river from the UA campus.

Mike we stay at hometown Suites every visit. Super nice rooms, prefer the back building to the front “studios” ! Can’t beat the price!

For food my Ds favorite is Newks!

what is the difference between the front and back buildings?

Probably the noise since it’s on a busy part of Veteran’s Drive (aka 15th Street).

Think you meant to refer to the Cypress Inn.

Yes! You are right. I realized my mistake as I went to sleep. lol. The Landing was an old restaurant on McFarland Blvd when I was a college student at Bama. The Cypress Inn indeed! Lovely atmosphere, and not too fancy.

The front building is older, the Studios have a small kitchenette.

In the back building the rooms are bigger, full kitchen, usually a couch with two queen beds.

No one has smoked in the building. The people are really nice who operate Hometown Suites!

Husband just wished it had a pool…
