<p>I'm planning to fly out to Chicago with my dad a few weeks from now and was wondering what hotels are good to stay in near campus that have free parking. thanks!</p>
<p>I’m not sure where the website is, but UChicago has an agreement with some hotel in the loop. Free shuttle service from the airport. They also run a shuttle from the hotel –> UChicago and back. I think it’s a Hilton.</p>
<p>Near campus and free parking? I think you may have the option of I-House. Otherwise, if you need free parking, you’re best off getting a cheap ($40-60/night) hotel with a parking lot in the suburbs. It would mean a 45-minute ride to the university, but it would allow you a safe place to park.</p>
<p>The Ramada Inn on S Lake Shore Drive has free parking and is very close.</p>
<p>But basically, apart from International House (no parking) and the Ramada Inn, Hyde Park lacks hotels. (There are a few B&Bs, too.) It’s a real problem for the university, and local residents recently blocked development of a first-class hotel there. People who are visiting the University generally stay in the Loop and take the #6 bus down. Look for hotels on or between State and Michigan, north of Columbus (which is where the 6 goes express to HP).</p>

<p>I’ve mentioned this before, but there’s a quaint hotel on 63rd and Cottage Grove. It’s close to campus, and right by public transportation so you can get to downtown easily and see the city.</p>
<p>[Sigh] In case the OP isn’t familiar with IHateUofC and his actually pretty great sense of humor and knowledge about Chicago – The previous post is kind of funny, but you probably don’t want to stay at a hotel at 63rd and Cottage Grove when you visit the University. Although, if it really exists I have no doubt that you could get quite an education there.</p>
<p>Depending on your flight schedules and how much time you may choose to spend in downtown Chicago in addition to Hyde Park, you might consider the “hotel campus” by Midway airport. Hotels range from the Sleep Inn to the Marriott, with easy parking, though some charge for it. It’s a 15-20 minute drive to campus either on 55th Street, or I-55, depending of course, on traffic! We find it convenient when we’re doing an in and out trip, primarily consisting of campus and Hyde Park activities.</p>
<p>It was a major setback when that Hyde Park hotel was blocked. Very disappointing. There are some Bread & Breakfasts in HYde Park. We have stayed at a couple and they have been very good. Two where we have not stayed are:</p>

<p>There are/were others, including the ones we stayed at I can’t find. Perhaps like the Wooded Isle, they may have closed.</p>
<p>Make sure to visit the Lake Shore Drive area near the Magnificant Mile, Navy Pier, Northwestern Univ’s Chicago campus (law & medical schools) & upscale hotels, shopping, dining & entertainment. Although not close to the University of Chicago’s campus, it is an area worth exploring to help understand why many prefer Chicago over other major cities.
P.S. I failed to address the issue of hotel options during a visit to the Univ. of Chicago. My recommendation is to stay in the Magnificent Mile area, expensive–but worth every cent, in my opinion.</p>

<p>Really, I can’t imagine going all the way to Chicago, and then staying at Midway Airport! Too much like Up In The Air for me.</p>
<p>Well, having been to Chicago many times, as both a student (NU) and a parent (U of C), sometimes you just need a place to sleep while shlepping stuff in, out and around Hyde Park. For such visits, the airport hotels work just fine!</p>
<p>I second runnersmom’s suggestion. For our October 3 day visit in 2008 we stayed in the Midway area with a rental car. Since we arrived very late at night and flew out on an early morning flight it was convenient. We just drove into downtown for a bit of sightseeing when we were finished with tours, interviews and the like. We were hardly in the room at all except to sleep.</p>
<p>For move in weekend we also stayed at the Midway complex which was hugely helpful for the purchases that couldn’t fit in the luggage. Many stores for dorm room supplies are within a mile - Target, Walmart, Office Depot, Best Buy. The only thing missing was Bed Bath & Beyond. Again, this trip we spent little time in the hotel, most of our time was shopping or on campus helping settle in. Free internet helped us track down the stores and supplies we had to buy.</p>
<p>For Family Weekend, we stayed on the Magnificent Mile and enjoyed being in a luxury hotel downtown. However, the daily parking rate was more than the car rental fee per day ($50 daily to park!!). Won’t be doing that again. Out by Midway parking was perhaps $10 a day or less. The rooms out by the airport are also much less expensive, many include a continental breakfast, and free internet. Downtown each of those is a separate charge for many hotels.</p>
<p>Sometimes its worth a splurge for a nice hotel experience. Sometimes you just want a clean, quiet, safe, convenient, less expensive room out by the airport.</p>
