hotels in tally

we are visiting FSU in late august !!
Looking at staying at doubletree or park plaza. can anyone tell me anything about them - i think i recall seiclan stayed at doubletree and liked it.

Trip Advisor lists the top hotels in Tallahassee:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g34675-Tallahassee_Florida-Hotels.html

DoubleTree is decent and within walking distance of campus (assuming the August heat and Tallahassee hills are ok for you). Stay away from the motels close to I-10...a bit to travel-oriented. The Comfort Suites on Apalachee Parkway is where we typically stay. (Keep it a secret)

Are the comfort suites within walking distance of FSU?

Not really, I've run the distance many times but it's really not a convenient walk.

Thanks parent2noles. I discovered that we will be visiting during seminole sensation week sure sounds like the college goes all out to welcome the students. I just posted a question on the UFL board to ask if they do something similiar..

The DoubleTree is probably a good 5 or 6 blocks from FSU (up and down hills). However, if you have to park at the Stadium it may be about the same distance to walk. I certainly recommend dressing for the weather, having good walking shoes and carry an umbrella (plus $$ for water and food).

I highly recommend the new Mariott Residence Inn on Gaines St. We stayed there during orientation in May and it was wonderful. Beautiful room with full kitchen and not far from campus.

^That's right - the new place. :) Glad to hear it's nice. They need more places to stay. When the Legislature is in Session it's very hard to find a nice room.

We stayed at the Residence Inn at the corner of Gaines and Railroad. Rooms were very nice, buffet breakfast, friendly service, but area around hotel was very, very run down. Also, there is a nearby train that runs, and whistles, through the night - it is the corner of Gaines and Railroad!. However, the hotel is very convenient to FSU. Gaines becomes Stadium, which takes you right to the visitor center. I wouldn't walk it, you'll be doing enough walking on campus.

We don't travel much, and so when we take a trip to visit a college, I don't mind paying a little more for a nice place. Maybe I even order room service for breakfast. However, there are no 4 or 5 star hotels in Tallahassee. None. We stayed at the Comfort Suites on Apalachee Pkwy. Not within walking distance, but the parkway has lots of restaurants, a mall, and other distractions. It was clean, comfortable, there was a computer and free internet access, and buffet breakfast that was OK. The eggs did look like they might have been cooked, frozen and reheated

I love B&B's, but have not looked into them for Tally.

I would also agree that you should avoid the hotels near I-10. And most of the residence/suite type hotels near midtown/univ are pretty similar (Marriott, Comfort, Fairfield...)

For breakfast:

Jim and Milt's on Pensacola Street (little known breakfast gem)
The Lunchbox - SE corner of Tennessee Street and Magnolia

Governor's Inn, Downtown, is a very nice quasi-B&B. It does not show up on the search engines, but you can go direct to their website http://www.thegovinn.com to get more info. Staying downtown is nice due to the historical ambiance, walkable brick streets, and non-chain restaurants & stores.

The Hilton Garden Inn off Apalachee Parkway is another decent hotel relatively close to campus (by car). It is across from the Governor's Square Mall. Ask for a room on the forest side of the hotel (vs. the pool) for a nice view. Price does not include breakfast, but there is a restaurant downstairs.

thanks to all..we booked doubletree since we wanted a pool. the residence inn was booked...and thanks parent2noles for breakfast suggestions!

The DoubleTree has been around a while but has been renovated and is decent. Try and get a room that faces north - the view from the upper floors is beautiful. Also, the Park Avenue area downtown is very nice for walking. The old city cemetery is a little down the block if you like a bit of history as well as the Old Capitol Building and others.
