Can anyone tell me about the hotels, motels, around Syracuse next to the University? Just planning trip for the Move-In Day. Any recommendations appreciated.

The Sheraton is almost certainly booked, besides, it’s super expensive.

Whenever my Dad visits, he stays at either the Ramada Inn or the Super 8. Both are just a few miles from the University, clean, and relatively cheap.

Thanks for the 411. Its going to be a loong summer.

The two closest hotels Sheraton and Genesee are not worth booking for move-in day. They are probably close to $500 for the two days. At other times, they are great. A new hotel owned by the Genesee recently opened which is also in walking distance - it is probably also very expensive. We have stayed in the Best Western about an 8 minute drive away on these busy SU weekends and it was fine.

Twoparent, thank you. This is going to be a family event, first one to go to college and I have a son who is autistic than I can’t leave him with, so he is travelling with us. And we are already on a tight budget, I don’t mind even a 30 minute drive.

go on www.marriott.com

look for the following:

Courtyard at Carrier Circle
Residence Inn at Carrier Circle
Towne Place Suites at Carrier Circle…

all terrific and reasonable…15 minutes from campus (and near Walmart/staples)

Thanks rodney for your recommendation.

There are a bunch of hotels in Liverpool that are maybe 15 min away from campus.
They are classified as being airport hotels.

Thank you MADAD. Im taking notes on all these recommendations.

You should book your hotel soon. They do fill up for move-in days. And, after all of the shopping is done, be prepared for your student to want to get involved in activities and leave you. We ended up attending the NY State Fair by ourselves when we moved our D in two years ago (although we live 4 hours away by car or train, so our situation might have been different if flights were involved).

@Twoparent - thank you. I am guessing that will happen with us. We will arrive directly to Syracuse, spend the days “shopping” and then leaving for her to wonder around and familiarize herself with the University. Oh boy, what a day that will be. I am holding back the “river” that I will be cyring up.
We are arriving from Puerto Rico, so how many days in advance you suggest me to take for all the big family event?

Your D will only be allowed in the dorm at a very specific day - so I realized that you will need this information first. My D’s freshman roommate was from Hawaii. They used the time to buy winter clothes, refrigerator, and assorted dorm stuff. In my D’s year, there were two days to choose from for move-in and you will want to pick the first one and then plan from there.

Thanks Twoparents. The move-in days are on August 24 and 25. So, yes, we need to do that first. I’m really nervous about this change. Life goes on…but boy its hard to cut the umbilical cord. LOL

My daughter just finished her freshman year…and we have been staying at the Hampton Inn on Erie Blvd…its about a year old, 10 minutes from campus, and near the stores ( sams club, bed bath and beyond, etc. Just booked in for my daughters move in…it will be here before we know it!!!

Thanks Born2RunMom. This will be a big event for my family. She will be the first generation going to college and out of the Island.

How hectic is this process, you that have experienced the Move-In.

We usually stay at the Hampton Inn-Carrier Circle or Hilton Garden Carrier Circle. My older son has stayed at Hampton-Airport. They are a 8 min. drive. All very nice and much more reasonable. The hotels closer to campus will charge your room when you book it, usually has a two day minimum and very crazy refund policy. Book now for move-in and family weekend.

We’ve stayed at the Ramada on Buckley Rd for our initial tour and for accepted student’s day. I made my reservations for move in day and family weekend back in February - as I knew this was my D’s first choice!

Probably booked by now, but we had no complaints about our room. There’s a decent hot breakfast, pretty standard fare, and helpful staff. My younger girl liked the indoor pool while it was snowing out last February. We are planning on visiting the NYS Fair after the drop off as well, to occupy the younger one.

We live in Syracuse so I don’t have to worry about a hotel room which is actually turning out to be a good thing. I do agree with Born2Runmom that the Hampton Inn is very close to SU. There is also an Embassy Suites off of Carrier Cr which is a nice option.
