What hotels/motels near the campus would you recommend? Any specifically to avoid? Thanks.

ramada i think limited or regular near the campus is nice and fairly priced

Thanks, india. I'll check that one out. I looked online elsewhere today and read a review that read, "Don't stay in any of the College Park hotels--they are all crummy." THAT was certainly encouraging, but I have to admit that some of the pics on orbitz didn't do any favors for most of what I saw.

We visited last week and stayed at the Marriott which is located right on the edge of the campus. It was unimpressive. Smallish rooms but convenient.

One of the seedier hotels on Orbitz had a review that talked about ****-roaches in the room and used condoms on the stairway. I can handle small rooms, I'd just prefer to skip that other stuff. Thanks for the info, altmom.

My son and I visited the campus last April and stayed at a Comfort Inn just up the road from campus. It was fine for the one night we were there. Interestingly, the room we reserved was not available when we arrived (previous occupants never checked out of it apparently) so for no additional money the hotel bumped us up to a two room suite. I took the bedroom. Son took the "living room" which had a sofabed, fridge, microwave etc. We each got our own TV's. But I am sure the room we originally reserved would have been fine too. We are not that particular about hotels as long as they are clean.

We stayed in a horrendous Marriott in Green Belt-- would definitely not return there. Planning to try the Holiday Inn for orientation.

i always stayed at Hampton inn. really close. and an ihop right next to it, i believe. rooms were nice, service was nice. it was like around $100 a night.

I thought it was very nice. The room had two queen beds, and it didn't seem small to me. For convenience, you can't beat it.

The Marriott was originally just an Inn and conference. It was all owned and operated by the university. At some point Marriott took over the operations of it and built on to it. The rooms in the older part are small. In the new part the rooms are bigger.

In the past Maryland has often overbooked the dorms. They offer dorm rooms to more students that they actually have rooms. When this happens Maryland often uses the hotels near campus to house students. Sometimes students end up being in the hotels for a whole semester. Therefore many of the hotels nearest campus are the quality of a dorm room or worse. I'm not entirely sure they are still doing this. I do know that as recently as two years ago they were still overbooking and using the hotels. Since I live within 45 minutes I never actually have to use a hotel but the Hampton Inn mentioned above looks nice. We often eat at the Hard Times across the street after games. I would recommend it or the Marriott on campus. Other than the Marriott I would stay away from hotels within walking distance of campus.

my parents always stay at the umuc marriott inn & conference center. they have said some of the rooms are small, but since they're visiting me they aren't spending much time in the hotel other than for sleeping.

Yes, the Marriott would have been my first choice, but they are booked for the time we're going to be there. Maybe next time.
