hotels near USC

For those of you who have visited/live
@ USC~
Do you have any suggestions for affordable,
clean, safe hotels nearby the campus?
Thanks!

theres the hotel right accross figerero(sp) i dont know about safe

I think the raddisson is right across the street. on the tour they said some of the rooms were used for dorms. probably not cheap though.

We always stay at the downtown Marriott, 333 South Figueora http://marriott.com/hotels/travel/laxdt-los-angeles-marriott-downtown/

There is a Vagabond Inn just north (walking distance) on Figueroa. Not fancy but adequate, and probably cheap and probably has parking. You can also "priceline" a 4-star hotel in Downtown. I got in at the Westin for $105 a night, about 3 miles from campus. Parking is $35 a night, however. The Dash bus runs up and down Figueroa from downtown in about 20 minutes for 25 cents, so you can leave the car behind. The Hotel Figueroa (or Figueroa Hotel) is about 1.5 miles north. I hear it's funky and artsy but hit-or-miss with service.

The Radisson Hotel across from campus is not very nice. Several of the floors have been converted into dorms for students, while the other rooms are in much need of renovation. I would only stay here if you absolutely must be close to campus.

Downtown hotels are very good, especially with the easy DASH service. However, parking can become quite expensive. If you only plan to visit the campus during the day, the DASH makes more economical sense than a car.

Thanks for the input so far...

Well, it doesn't have to be extremely near to USC...
I am just looking for a good, clean hotel, with a good price.
We have a car so transportation is not a problem.
Thanks! :-)

Radisson is really the only hotel where you can walk to campus. Stayed there last year and it was VERY noisy, old, and run down. Even though it was very convenient, I would not stay there again. I would stay downtown- only a couple miles away. Vagabond is a few blocks north- never stayed there but it is cheap. You can look up hotels close to the LA Convention Center or Staples Center because those are on Figueroa (downtown) just a couple miles from USC.

we stayed at the westin on figueroa, about 2 mi. north of campus. nice hotel tho' they'll add charges for internet, parking, breakfast, etc.

didn't have a car, but used DASH (route F) to get to campus and back.

good luck

I know you're looking for something near the hotel and at an affordable price range, but if you're willing to go a little farther and pay a little bit more, I HIGHLY recommend the Chamberlain in West Hollywood.

With rooms at ~$300 a night, it better be highly recommended...haha.

The OMNI - across from Disney center a few miles from USC, has a special USC rate @ $150 [ you need to ask for it], which is cheap considering what a great hotel it is.

Um yeah groovinhard, why don't you check that website again?

Try more like $230 a night.

^Haha, that's still pretty expensive. The rooms I was looking at were like $260 (I put in April dates for Explore), so I rounded up ;).

But anyway the more upscale ones are helpful to me, because I was kinda hoping my Mom and I could turn the college visits into a little mother-daughter graduation trip thing. A week in LA at a fancy hotel would be fun...

rounding up about 40 is a bit of a difference in hotel price. But like i said, if you're willing to go a little farther for a little more, it's worth it. the chamberlain is a boutique hotel that used to be an apartment complex, so there aren't many rooms, and it's secluded (pool on the roof type thing). well worth it if you want to make your stay a little more special.

We have had good luck using travelocity.com and calling the USC STA (travel service). They often have blocks of rooms at a good price.

We have stayed at the Biltmore downtown (nice-attached to a small mall).

Away from campus, we have stayed at the Radisson in Culver City. Pretty centrally located, about 25 minutes to campus and 10 to the airport. Good prices, big rooms.

Thank you College Confidential (and especially menloparkmom!) for the Omni Hotel recommendation. My parents had a reservation at the Omni for graduation for $249/night. After reading mpm's posting, I was able to rebook it for $159/night! See, time spent on CC does pay off...

If anyone has already been to a commencement ceremony, I would like to know if you are allowed to save seats for others, or if it is strictly first come, first served? Thanks for your input.

Went to grad last year. People around you don't like it but you can save seats. They set up lots of seating all around campus with big screens to show the stage. Don't worry if you don't get up close.

Menloparkmom, if you're still around, how did you get the special USC rate at the Omni?? I tried that today and they insisted that the rate is only available to USC employees, not students or families?
