My son and I may be visiting UR this month, but we have never been to Rochester before and are unfamiliar with the area. Does anyone have some recommendations for moderately-priced hotels near the school? Ideally, they would be within walking distance or provide shuttle service to/from UR, because I would like to avoid the expense of renting a car if I can.

Can anyone tell me how much a taxi ride from the airport to the school costs and how long it takes? Is there a bus route that would be cheaper?

Any suggestions for places to eat near the school?

We drive to Rochester, so I can't tell you about hotels within walking distance of campus; my guess is that the Admissions Office could. I've never noticed any hotels within walking distance.

We usually stay in Henrietta, NY at the Country Inn & Suites. It's very reasonable for a double room, very comfortable and has a nice buffet breakfast included. (No eggs, bacon, etc.; cereals, breads, waffles, yogurt, some fruit.) You may be able to get an even better rate if you tell them you're coming to visit Rochester. It's a straight shot of about 8 or 9 miles to the River Campus. I can't imagine that a cab would be too expensive.

Cabs from the airport are about a 5 minute trip. Unfortunately I don't know how much they cost because my d uses a student voucher.

My d and her friends like the Distillery - great Buffalo wings - within walking distance of campus. They also love the Dinosaur BBQ, not within walking distance but not too far. There's a bagel place near the CVS, within walking distance, too.

Many of these questions can be addressed to Admissions (particularly about cab fares); I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you.

Can't suggest hotels or restaurants because I've never been to Rochester either, but I can tell you that a cab from the airport to the university is $10. (D was at Rochester last week--she took a cab to the airport from campus.)

And there was a discussion thread in the parents forum that covered restaurants and hotels recently:

We stay at the Hampton Inn in Henrietta when visiting. 10 min from campus, and 10 min from lots of dining options (get a map from front desk). Plus the nice free breakfast saves time in the morning. Just off of Rt. 390

Second the Hampton Inn. This is the one across from Monroe CC, not the one near the airport. It's walking distance to a few resturants including Bazil (Italian) right next door. Don't forget to get the ROC discount and sign up for HiltonHonors.

Also for the foodies check out Park Ave, King and I (Thai), Great Northern Pizza, and a host of others that you can find in the U of R archives...

There are many places to eat. I like the Portobello on Rte 15 just south of UR as well as many of the places others have posted. Unfortunately, you will need a car for some of them. I would advise calling UR for suggestions for places close to a bus route. I hope you enjoy your visit.
