HI. We are (hopefully) coming for honors weekend March 16-19. Can anyone recommend hotels close to Tulane and/or on streetcar route? We are not going to have a car. The hotels recommended on the honors site are booked already Indigo and Hampton Inn. Since it is St Pattys day weekend, many others are sold out. I put a hold on the Alder Hotel. Does anyone know anything about this hotel? I am open to other ideas!! Thanks… a little stressed already!! I guess it will be packed that weekend too!
We stayed at Le Pavillion on Poydras St downtown, an easy two block walk to the street car. Hub and daughter are attending the March 11-12 weekend and are staying at Wyndham. As long as you can walk to the street car (St. Charles), it’s fine. I prefered the Central/Warehouse area because it’s not as crazy as Canal St/French Quarter. Safe for walking, etc. I really liked Le Pavillion and would stay there again, but we went for the cheap rate this trip. I’m keeping my eye on Hotwire and expedia.com for sale rates for August!
Did you get a tulane discount at wyndham? Rates are about 350 on website
wait, there are multiple wyndham hotels… this is tough!
We booked the Alder for first Honors Weekend. It’s a good location for getting to/from campus. There are places closer to St. Charles and the streetcar line, but you’ll likely find them to be more expensive second weekend due to the St. Patrick’s Day factor. Everything else being equal I would have booked somewhere else if availability and price were not a factor, but the Alder is a perfectly good hotel in a safe neighborhood. Quick 5-10 min cab/Uber ride over to campus.
And just an FYI for anyone not familiar…while cheap and convenient, the St. Charles streetcar line is NOT the fastest or most efficient way to get around. It’s a great way to take a leisurely trip to see the sites of the Garden District, Uptown or get somewhere when you are not in a hurry. But if you have a time you need to be somewhere, especially in the morning or afternoon rush hours when locals are using it to get to/from home, make sure you allow ample time. It’s slow moving and makes many, many stops. Still ,it’s one of my very favorite New Orleans experiences and everyone should try it if they have time.
The Park View Hotel is right across from Tulane and adjacent to Audubon Park. It is really nice and convenient. We also like the Avenue Bed and Breakfast further down St Charles Ave.
Thanks! I was very suspicious of the Alder hotel since not only was it available but it was sooo much cheaper. How would you get from that hotel to French quarter or other tourist areas?
Anyone else with any other hotel recs?
Park view booked
Tulane has a list of hotels that they partner with to get discounted rates at http://tulane.edu/about/visiting-tulane/plan-your-visit/traveling-new-orleans/hotel-accommodations.
You could either walk to the streetcar line and take it to the Quarter or grab a cab. New Orleans is a very cab friendly city. There are plenty around and frankly the rates are pretty low. I NEVER rent a car when I come to New Orleans for that reason. There are too many easier options than driving and parking there. Or, if you are an Uber user, there is that option. I hope you enjoy your visit!
We stayed at the Ponchetrain - it’s on the trolly route just a little futher but that didn’t detract from the experience at all. Also has a cool rooftop bar!
@threebeans How was the Pontchartrain? We are staying there this weekend for Destination Tulane (the only date that worked with my daughter’s schedule).
We stayed near the St. Charles street car line, so it was easy to get from downtown to Tulane. I found the best prices on Expedia, hotels.com and hotwire.com. I used Hotwire this time – getting a room for $96 a night at the Wyndham French Quarter. Trivago is a convenient aggregator for best rates, but Priceline and Hotwire are the least expensive if you don’t mind not knowing which hotel until after you reserve. Also, Hotwire sometimes tips you off on which hotel it is, which is why I went for the Wyndham.
The Hilton New Orleans Riverside is enormous. It sits on a streetcar stop (Not the St. Charles, but you could take that line to the St. Charles line.) Or you could walk to the St. Charles line, it’s not terribly far.
@proudmama2016 … I have never used hotwire… How did you know which hotel is the wydham? All the hotels I have looked at are 350-400 per night plus tax, and that includes the hampton inn… which I know usually charges less, but we are going St Paddys day weekend!
If I were you, I would hurry up and get a hotel booked, even though it may not be in exactly the part of own you want. As I survey the hotel landscape for the second weekend, rates are quickly going up and availability is limited.
As far the the Wyndham goes, there are multiple Wyndham properties in the city but they are all in the French Quarter or Central Business District (CBD) areas within a fairly small concentrated area. No matter which you choose it it will be roughly the same distance from campus with the same transportation options. Good luck.
I’m going to agree with every everyone who said don’t limit yourself to being near the streetcar line. It is a very slow method of transportation and taking a cab or Uber is going to be better for getting to Tulane at a specified time. The Adler hotel is pretty new, it’s very basic as its geared towards families with patients in the hospital but its a convenient location not far from Tulane. Got good reviews from families that stayed there for Family Weekend.
@busymd, so sorry that I haven´t responded. we´re away for the week but I managed to get to the hotel´s biz office. Hotwire is a bit of a crap shoot. They won´t tell you the hotel until you book, but sometimes they give you a hint if you click on the hotel special. I just went to the site and HOLY COW! prices were sky high. perhaps because of the holiday weekend. Our weekend is almost half the price. I suggest looking mid week. Also, for best rate do the Hot rate Special, not the regular listing of hotels (that show the name in the listing). I think because I´m a frequent user, the algorithm gives me deals that pop up. Choose the neighborhoods you want (on the map, click on the area). Hope you find a good deal for your weekend! (Apologies for the funky typing but I´m using a non US keyboard and can´t find all the punctuation marks. It´s a different keyboard!) Lastly, try Trivago. It´s an aggregate that shows prices across many sites. Good luck!
Have you tried the Hampton Inn St. Charles Garden District? They do have availability for your dates and the rates are decent.
I had an enjoyable stay here recently. While I agree that the St. Charles Streetcar is not the most reliable form of transportation when you are pressed for time, we used it as a primary form of transportation. We used Uber once when we needed to due a time constraint.
