I'm about to be a freshman at NYU, and am looking for a list of some suggestions on cool little restaurants, live music venues, jazz places, comedy, other shows, and other places where awesome things happen near the school where kids go/know about. I tried searching for something like this but to no avail, thanks for your help.

These are all good places to start. If you tell us a little more about what you’re into, some upperclassmen could probably give some good recommendations.

I saw The Roots at the Highline Ballroom I know they perform there quite often. They also have a lot of jazz performers. Its on 16th street and 9th ave.

There are a lot of places like Highline scattered across the city so you should be able to find some fairly easily. I know that there are always people advertising live comedy shows in times square although I’ve never been to one.

The Comedy Cellar is a few blocks from campus and usually has comedy with a two item minimum. Drinks + an appetizer or dessert will count for your minimum. It’s not any big headliner comedians, but they’re pretty funny and less shady than the comedy clubs in Times Square.

If like a certain Broadway show or an off-Broadway show, Google or call them and see if they offer student rush. A lot of my friends get decent seats to Broadway shows by buying student rush tickets.
