Next week, I'm going to visit some profs to ask them about working/volunteering in their labs.
If they ask me how many hours per week I can be a lab volunteer/assistant, then what is a good number to tell them? How many hours per week is considered too much, average, or low?
Thanks.

don't say less than 6 hours

i think 10 is a good number to shoot for....

Next week I'm going to talk to some profs during their office hours. What are some good questions to ask them during the talk?

Well ask them in depth about the research project. They will prob ask you what classes you are taking or have taken, experience, etc. Usually, they do much more talking than you at the interview b/c they present you w/ topics that they are researching and you sort of ask them quest while they are explaining the basic idea of the study. Make sure you ask them if you can read up on something or stuff like that. That shows that you are serious and willing to help out by devoting your free time to performing more research.

YSK1,
I pm'ed you some hints that should help you in securing research positions.
In regards to how much time to devote - keep it flexible depending on your course load.
You should never compromise your grades in order to do research.
Without strong fundamental knowledge from courses, it's difficult to be think like a researcher.
