Hi!
I was wondering if anyone could provide me with any more information about Capen house, maybe some pictures? I haven't visited the campus, and I am dieing of curiousity!!!
THANKS

You'll probably have better luck if you post your question on The Jolt. If you're not sure what that is, go to smith.dailyjolt.com

I just wish someone could tell me more about Baldwin...

Capen House is beautiful, it's the big white pillared one across the law from Cutter (where I live, woot! cutter love). Capenites seem to have pretty strong community, probably because there house isn't really around any of the other houses (they don't have a sister house or anything), so it's kind of just them. You're close to state street and pretty near downtown and very close to the campus school and the campus school playground (which is awesome). Probably the best feature is that Capen has its own gardens, which are really gorgeous, and you're near the Davis student center which is where the good on campus non house parties happen.

And Mari, all I know about Baldwin is that they have a pretty intense rivalry with Albright house, and that its position right on state street makes it really close to the grocery store and Hungry ghost bread.

That's kind of funny, because I wanted to live in Albright.

What, may I ask, is Hungry ghost bread??

Hungry Ghost is a local bakery. I think they just make bread, but they may possibly make other things too. Having that close proximity to the State streets grocery stores (Serio's Grocery store and Deli, State street fruit, state street grocery, and state street liquor :) ) is nice, especially since Baldwin and Albright don't have dining. Also, Serio's is the pharmacy that Health Services uses, so if you take Birth control or any other kind of pill, you won't have far to walk.

Baldwin (where my d. lived before joining the commune at Hopkins) was the house of Julie Nixon. The bottom floor (basement) was set up as a Secret Service headquarters while Julie was at Smith, and those have now become nice rooms. The smell of fresh bread baking is fantastic. It is also across the street from the Friday night kosher kitchen (you don't have to be Jewish to attend.)

Mini, my D has been placed in a quad suite in Baldwin's basement. I think I read somewhere that your D hated the basement rooms in Baldwin. Looks like they have been renovated and reconfigured to suites. What are the positives about Baldwin?

{{ What are the positives about Baldwin}}

2,000,000.00 in renovations and the addition of air-conditioning.

Dont fret, your daughter will be more than pleased with the new rooms.

Anyone know anything about gillett and the 5th floor?

My d. didn't hate the basement rooms in Baldwin (she lived on the 3rd floor.) She moved to Hopkins for the more communal situation there (and she had friends there), and to be able to cook for herself. (She actually liked the food at Smith - especially at Lamont - it was the act of cooking, with friends, that she felt she was missing.)

Baldwin was a pretty nice house before the renovations - which it nonetheless needed. Now, I'll bet it will be fantastic!

i'm super jealous of the Baldwin renovations, and they get aircondition?! Not fair! :) oh well, guess I'll just have to wait my turn.

Correction, Julie lived in Baldwin only her 1st yr. After marrying, she lived in an apt across the street from Baldwin

I got to go to a ball with Julie and David in 1967 at the Hotel Northampton.

Nope. Kosher/halal dining during the week is at Cutter/Z, but the food comes from the Kosher Kitchen which is across the street from Baldwin and Albright. Also, the Kosher Kitchen is where they cook meals on Fridays for Sabbath, and anyone is welcome to help cook and then partake in the meal regardless of religion.

My mistake. I mistook her question to mean which house the was Kosher dinning room located, not where the actual meals were cooked. You're correct. :)
