Housegift for hosts when your student goes visiting?

We are also looking for a housegift for a homestay family in South America. Thought of the maple candy, but would like to add something more lasting. Cookbook is an interesting idea - but I am not sure how the ingredients would translate or if the family will be able to read English easily. Pitcher is a little dicey since it is breakable. Definitely would be interested in other thoughts.

1012mom - we are in Mexico. We have a lot of American stuff, but they taste different. Kids down here like Reeses peanut butter cup and Sour Patch kid. Whenever we go back to the State D2 brings bags back, and she is often the most popular kid for a day.

Sometimes foreign families like very American things. I know most of them enjoy tee-shirts with the American Flag…Old Navy and any store has them in stock now for July 4th…

Any type of American product…I know…hard to find…some sort of gift plate or bowl that comes boxed…and is easily transportable…look at Homegoods for inexpensive ideas, or Macy’s homestore…maybe you can purchase some stonewall kitchen sauces or jellies and have them boxed…

Or a picture frame that your child could give them after his stay with a picture of him with all of them…or a combination of a few things!

Cookbook is out - unlikely the families he will be staying with will speak any English. I don’t think USA t-shirts in the Middle East are a good idea. Jams or jellies would be fine - though I worry a bit about breakage.

We’re trying to decide what to give to our Spanish host family. Here is one of my ideas from a local company:

I kind of like this one:

A bird and bunny enjoy the peaceful shelter of a willow tree. The finely sculpted detail reminds us to look around, take time to notice the hidden beauty in nature. Perfect for display in a sun room, or display on the deck outdoors. Remember, it’s the tiny details that make life so enjoyable.

Verse reads: “There is beauty to be found in every corner of this world”

Charming bookends

Any ideas of good gifts to take to China? We have noticed that most of the little doo-dads sold with local logos are actually made in China these days…
