Houses/dorms application process for freshman?

So for a freshman, what is the best house/dorm? I'm pretty sure I wanna live on the quad, but I dont know really anything else. How does the application process work? Does requesting earlier get you a better spot, and do you have to request a house, or a building?
I think I want to live in the lower quad, for a little more convenience to math/science.
Is it worth waiting till after penn preview to choose? I've already visited the quad a couple times (and hill, but I'd rather forget that experience...)

LOL @ hill comment XD

The housing process is online and you get a huge packet of information from Penn Housing regarding the entire thing.

It’s a lottery system, so I think, as long as you apply before the deadline, it doesn’t matter if you apply extremely early or late.

If you know you want to live in the quad, go for it. I live in Fisher and it’s been a really nice experience. However, you may go see other places during Penn Previews that might change your mind. Also, Penn Previews might help you choose between the three college houses in the quad.

Yeeeeah I applied to the three Quad houses, followed by the three high rises, followed by Stouffer, followed by KCEH, with Hill not on the list, yet I got placed in Hill. It’s not awful now, especially since they renovated it the year after I got outta there, but stuff still just doesn’t work in that dorm. Avoid it like the plague.

Well, truth be told, Hill college house isn’t THAT bad.

The dining hall is hella convenient and it is the closest dorm to the Engineering Quad and DRL/Chem Building which is where phys, math, and chem classes all are. That being said, the rooms are really small unless you are one of the lucky few who get a signle thats really a double without the second bed.

The quad would be a solid choice, but going for one of the residential programs in the High Rises would be fine too since that means that you are guaranteed to get in the most sought after dorms on campus sophomore year and later.
