Houses?

This one's for the first-years: What houses did you get sorted into? Do you have any questions about them (I'm a self-identified hater of housing threads, but this year I'm curious)?

I'm in Baldwin, fourth floor. How big are singles there?

As a transfer, I'm not technically a first year, but I'm in Ziskind on the third floor. I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of the rooms?

Montanaro, the singles can range from small-ish to medium-ish. I don't remember there being any ridiculously large singles in Baldwin.

How is Jordan House (4th floor, double, corner end room)? I hear there is no elevator.

I haven't personally been up to the 4th floor of Jordan, I think the corner doubles are on the large end of medium sized rooms, if that makes any sense. :) There is definitely no elevator in Jordan, sorry.

AmenoMusicata, I don't have pictures of the Ziskind rooms, but I do have pictures of my room in Cutter (lived there for two very happy years), I think. I'll see if I can find them and PM them to you.

I second what smithiegr said about Baldwin, the rooms are not especially large, even the doubles are on the small side. But with singles, you don't need a ton of space really.

And yes, no elevator in Jordan. No elevator in any of the houses except King/Scales and Chase/Duckett, I believe. And it is HOT and HUMID in Massachusetts in August, so when you move in, come prepared to sweat. The good news is, once you finally get your stuff moved in, you don't have to worry about it for nine more months. Also, your HONS (Head of New Students) will help you move your stuff in so you won't be totally on your own.

D is in Duckett. From what she could locate on the website, it seems to be an international house? What light can you shed on this? Thanks.

Duckett isn't an international house. It's one of the houses that has an elevator, so moving in will be easier. They're known for having a really tight house community (they all sit together at meals and stuff).

You could call every house at Smith an "international" house. International students are placed everywhere. :)

I'll be a Lamonster! I'm excited for the dining in Lamont if nothing else. Well, the dining and all the awesome people I've talked to and just basically everything, really. :) I was hoping for an older house with more "specialized" traditions and whatnot, but there's no point in being miffed about it.

SmithieandProud: From what I've heard, Lamont also has an elevator. Good thing, too, since I'm pretty high up and my dad can't lift anything after his surgery.

To update SaP's elevator list:

Chase and Duckett (they share an elevator)
Lamont
King and Scales
Comstock and Wilder

... I think that's it. All the classroom buildings also have elevators.

You're right, I forgot about the Lamont and Comstock elevators.

Duckett's a nice house, especially if you're D is into art, since it's right across from the art building.

And i wouldn't fret too much about not having an older house, Irene, I spent two very happy years in Cutter and i was horrified when I got placed there as a first-year. It's not the traditions or the architecture, it's the people that make or break your housing situation.

Plus, Lamont's being renovated this summer so it should be beautiful when you arrive. My house was renovated last summer, and while it was weird to come back for senior year to a "new" place (the floor plan completely changed!), my room (part of which was formerly a bathroom) was amazing and I already miss it.

Does anyone know anything about Lawrence, like how big are the rooms, is there an elevator? Thanks.

Lawrence is a cute old house down on Green Street. It has no elevator, and as with all of the older houses at Smtih, the rooms vary in size depending on floor and location. Some of the rooms in the older houses are very large, some are smaller. You'll have to wait and see!
