Hey new freshman. I'm a rising sophomore and just one year ago, I was you! Freaking out about housing. And I have just one warning: Don't fall for the housing stereotypes. No matter where you live, you will be fine. Really. No dorms are actually THAT anti-social. No dorms are actually THAT disgusting. And no dorms are actually THAT far away from anything. (It's a small campus with a lot of shuttles going around.) You'll be fine where ever you live. Just remember that. Read the housing guide. But take the negative comments lightly. And choose the top 5 that immediately stand out to you. Don't fret for too long about it.

Oh, and if you're super worried about choosing the "right" dorm to make friends. Do a pre-orientation program. It's the best choice you can make to start your college experience.

im considering slivka…but im worried about its location. do the frats ever majorily distract studying efforts? also, is it a MAJOR disadvantage not having a dining hall in the same building?

It’s not a major disadvantage. Yeah, it’s cold outside in the winter, but the distance from Slivka to Sarge is less than the distance to pretty much any of your classes.

D’s been in slivka for two years. Her comments - accessibility to dining apparently wasn’t much of an issue. However the trek across campus in the height of winter was a major downer. At other times, it was great for W&I because we got a call from her almost every day when she was headed there. Most of her classes were in the north, but she had to go down for French, and she says timings and location make the shuttle unsuitable to avoid the walk. So check where your classes will be held.

Other than that she’s been very happy with Slivka, but next year she’s moving out so she and her roommates can cook. She’s a vegetarian and has had enough of the meal plan offerings.

@Dadof3: How can your D not be happy with the meal plan offerings? The dining halls have so much vegetarian/vegan stuff that many non-vegetarian/non-vegan students complain there isn’t enough “normal” food.

To answer other questions, it’s really up to chance whether you get your top pick or not. I know lots of people who got their first or second choice, and lots who didn’t. I didn’t even get any of my top 5 choices, and I had some pretty big dorms on my list – Allison, Elder, etc. But I’m happy with where I wound up, so it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get your first choice, or even your first 3 choices.

It is not a big disadvantage not to have a dining hall in your dorm. Having to walk to a dining hall is no big deal. If you think it will be a problem, you can buy a box of cereal or something to keep in your dorm for mornings when you’re too lazy to go to the dining hall. In my experience, it’s not been a problem.

Vegi food comes in a zillion types and I’m guessing the ones that are commonly served are not to her liking; somewhat a middle easterner who gets meats but not the roasted lamb he fancies, often enough, so he decides to move out to make something more to his liking…

I’m a French/CS double major, so I’m quite familiar with the walk from north campus to Kresge. It’s about 0.6 miles. It’s annoying, but it gets me a little exercise when the quarter’s at its worst. The shuttles only run every 40 minutes or so in the morning, and the walk is about 10 minutes.
