housing and menu questions

I am an incoming freshman at Dartmouth and I just received my Housing and First-Year packets, so I have a few questions:

I’d like to live with 2 or 3 roommates. Is this likely to happen? If I did have this number of roommates, would I be near where my classes are or not?

Is East Wheelock worth applying to?

I can’t activate my BlitzMail, because the password is incorrect. Am I supposed to be able to activate it?

The First-Year letter says that I should have a lot of things, including the ability to fill out a Personal Data form, in my Undergraduate Prematriculation Menu. I don’t have anything new in the menu. Am I supposed to, or will that come later?

Thanks!

I haven't received anything yet, but according to the people on the Facebook group, we won't be able to activate our email accounts until mid-June.

It really depends on where they place you, from what I heard when you request a certain number of roommates they take it under consideration but it doesn't guarantee anything. There really aren't any quads available to freshmen. I looked through the res life guide they sent and the only quads I found were in New Hampshire hall, which isn't available to frosh. As for triples, the ones that are available to us would be in Russell Sage/Butterfield (there might be more but I didn't see any listed) and those are very close to the center of campus.

That's up to you. It's away from the central part of campus and the students get very close, but there is sort of a nerdy stereotype to East Wheelock. I am personally not applying, but it's really up to you. Oh and it costs a little bit more per term, I'm not sure of the difference. You can look it up in the financial aid part of the dartmouth website.

The stuff they sent us says that Blitzmail accounts won't be available till mid-June

Most of those things will be available on June 1st in the Prematriculation Menu

I stayed in East Wheelock during Dimensions. The rooms were spacious (I was in a three-room double with two bedrooms and a common room) and I liked having a private bathroom, but it seemed very quiet and not terribly social. I don't think I'll be applying.

hey question: I'm thinking of applying to east wheelock, but i'm worried i might get a floor that isn't really that into the whole human interaction thing :-) how difficult is it to switch from ew to another dorm after terms started?

oh, i'm loving the facebook/CC discussions :)

lol indeed. Do i know you on facebook btw?

ehh, i guess... "know," lol

but yeah, I'm thinking of EW too... I stayed there during Dimensions and liked how big it was... although, I have to admit... it was really really quiet...

and my host's neighbour called him anti-social... it was pretty funny :)

tell me, findfishfast, do you ever feel antisocial? particularly around a group of latinos? do you handle it by insisting that youre latino too, even though you belong to another race/races?

(i apologize for the paragraph. if youre not who i think you are, it would make very little sense :-) )

No, I'm pretty sure you're referring to the right person. :p

oh good :-)

Freshmen stay in the same room for the entire school year.

EW is quiet, but it is probably the only set of dorms available to freshmen with private baths. A lot does depend on the dynamics of the floor. My D lived on the 3rd floor in morton freshman year and they were a very cohesive group (many of them are still good friends going into senior year). However, she had friends who lived on other floors of EW and their floor mates rarely interacted with one another.

haha, latinos... hmm...

it wasn't entirely difficult to find out who i was...
thanks elisabeth for confirming it... i remember lurking around CC, and I was like... how many Swedish peeps in DC are there going to Darty? ahh, that's her!!

as for ammar, ehh... your name gave it away... it's... um... eponymous? blah... i choked on that word, possibly even used it incorrectly... who cares? lol

but yea, he was like "dude, your're anti-social" and my host replied "no i'm not! i just don't like to hang out with white people!" haha, pretty funny...

Apply to East Wheelock only if you really value your privacy and quiet. Many people I know who are really anti-social live there, and many people who are more sociable regret living there now.

With the beautiful new dorms, it is no longer worth it to live in East Wheelock just for the extra space and new facilities. Also it's very far away from everything and VERY far away from the frats. If you know for sure that you will hate the frats with a passion, then East Wheelock could be really good for you.

Just know what you are getting into beforehand if you apply there. And if you're really set on East Wheelock, at least apply for something besides a single so you aren't by yourself the whole year.

I agree with Sybbie -- making friends in East Wheelock is hit or miss. I recommend going for regular housing. Nobody regrets not applying to East Wheelock -- only the other way around.

What dorm is best if you are a non-drinker, studious, but who is also very sociable? Are frats really the main social outlet? What is the second-most popular place to hang out?

If they don't want to go out to the frats, people usually just chill in their dorms. Unfortunately, there aren't many other night-time social spaces on campus. Lone Pine Tavern is pretty fun, but it isn't a regular hang-out spot.

You should definitely be open to hanging out at frats, sororities, and co-eds. At most of the frats you really don't have to drink.

All the other dorms are pretty much the same in terms of sociability. The choates might be a little ragier than the rest and the river a little less so because it's so far away.

but going back to the original question, i have all of the others pretty much answered, but do you think i could get a triple/quad as a freshman, and if so what would it be like?

I think you can only get a quad in East Wheelock. Triples aren't hard to get -- I think there are some three-room triples in the River and large two-room triples in Russell Sage. You should check the floor plans on ORL's website. If you write on your housing application that you REALLY want to live in a triple or quad, there is a good chance that they will give it to you.

I liked living in a two-room triple as a freshman because I was able to get close to two girls right away instead of just one. Also, I liked that we all slept in the same room and the other room had our desks and a couch and tv. It was nice having two separate spaces so if someone wanted to watch tv and someone wanted to sleep, it wasn't a problem.

Most of the other freshman rooms are two-room doubles which are just fine too. Usually one person gets the inner room, and the other gets the outer room.

Hi Jen,

All the best to you on finals and I hope you have an amazing time at sophomore summer.

There are singles, one room and 2 room doubles, 3, 4 and 5 room quads in EW. The make up is single -bath- single (each person enters from their room).

Thanks Sybbie! You are the best!

I just finished my last paper this morning and I can't wait to go home and then come back for sophomore summer!
