Hey. I've recently decided that id be committing to IU on a direct admit to Kelley soon. I've been hearing a lot of news about orientation filling up quickly, and I was wondering is there any disadvantage of waiting? Also, more importantly, for housing does IU do it at random? I've been told Northwest is the best location but if they do applications at a first come first serve basis, there will be absolutely no chance of me getting a nice dorm. I'd really like to know some information soon so that I can make a firm decision soon. Preferably, i'd like to wait for my other school's aid offers but I doubt is get as much as I did from IU anyway so no problem if I should hurry up.

The only “disadvantage” would be that you could have less options on the times of your classes.

Yeah, the earlier orientation spots are optimal because you’ll get to sign up for classes. But freshmen are already at the bottom of the barrel to begin with… you’re going to be registering after all of us current students for the fall 2011 term. You’ll be able to get your classes. I went to one of the last orientation dates and I still was able to get my required classes and have a totally fine schedule.

Dorm selections are first come first serve. But I did everything really late… I submitted my housing and enrollment deposit exactly on May 1st (I was indecisive). I put Northwest first, and my roommate also applied for housing late as well and we both obviously got our first pick. As long as you submit your housing app now, you’ll be okay. I can’t say whether or not you’ll get your first pick but you definitely still stand a chance. The worst case scenario is that you’ll be staying in a dorm lounge first semester, and someone from RPS told me that only happens if you submit your housing contract SUPER late… like during the summer.

Another way to make sure you get Northwest would be to request one of the specific NW areas, like the Briscoe Co-Op (do they still have that?), the Fitness & Wellness LLC, or the Global Village.
