Housing and RAPs

My D has been accepted, but waiting to look at one more school at the end of February before she makes her final decision. If she makes decision at the beginning of March, does that still give her enough of a head-start to get into a RAP before it fills up or get into the dorms on campus vs. off campus? The RAP is the issue. Thanks.

When my son was accepted two years ago, he didn’t turn in his housing request until Admitted Student Day (April 8). At that point the housing dept. ‘scares’ you into thinking that you will not get placed on main campus housing or in Kittridge Village housing (the two most desirable ones in my opinion). He was in engineering so that helped as their housing is specific for them. So, to answer your question, I think the beginning of March is okay. A few of the main campus dorms will be filled by then (Baker, probably). But, as soon as she knows, do it that day! If you have any RAP questions, ask me as I’m pretty familiar with them.

@mayzie - she actually decided to go to Boulder at the beginning of February without even seeing the other school because CU had so many major options that were appealing vs. the other school, which was really her deciding factor, even though CU is so much more money. Might as well go to a school that has something interesting for her to study! She applied to housing - Baker as her first choice - the first week of February. So we shall see. Thanks!

@3mamagirls - Great. Happy to see that she applied to housing already. Baker is a great choice. Offers a lot of the Natural Sciences, plus writing classes, etc. What’s her major?

Thank you, @Mayzie - very helpful. My son was invited to the honors program, majoring in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and has been looking at both Baker and Smith RAPs. He’s still waiting to hear from a few schools before making a final decision, so that might rule out Baker if it fills quickly…though I think he’d prefer the program in Baker to Smith. Guess we’ll see!

@MountainGirl - glad I could help. My daughter has been accepted into Honors and is thinking of studying Chemistry. So she is looking at Baker or Kittridge West (HealthScience RAP). We looked at several of the dorms two weeks ago, and the other one she really liked was Sewall. It is the History RAP (definitely not her thing), but they offer 3 science classes every semester. Sewall is right next to the brand new Rec Center which she liked a lot. Plus it has it’s own dining hall in the dorm. (FYI, the dining hall in Libby Hall is going away next year, so the Baker students will have to walk to either the C4C, the UMC, or to Sewall to eat.)

This was 2011, but my D didn’t decide on CU until April. She still got into the popular Baker dorm with the science RAP. She loved taking her chem 1 class in a small setting in the dorm.

Hi Mayzie… I just read your reply to a question and i was wondering if you can help me with something. My DD will starting in the fall in engineering, she doesn’t want to stay in a dorm primarily for engineering students, you mentioned about kitterage, is that near the engineering building. She wants a newer or renovated building and does Not wants not a community bathroom but just to share with a few girls, Does Kitterage dorms accommodate that? Also do you have to apply for the RAP, I know with her acceptance letter they offered her acceptance into the honors program Thanks

Baker seems to be the most popular for central campus, since it was very recently renovated and has air conditioning and more of the suite dorms now. The Kittredge complex is another good choice, as it is still on the edge of campus and has air conditioning, lots of suite style dorms, etc. If you dig into the CU housing website it has very good info on the various dorms, and a map of all of the locations, etc.

@phallen Have her look at Global Engineering RAP. Its a great group of students, the application requires knowledge of French, German or Spanish, but in practice foreign languages are just an interest and no longer spoken at this RAP. The students there are supportive of each other and the resident faculty is super. Its in a good location too. There is usually room at Global Engineering, because of the application process puts student off a bit. They have to answer one question in the foreign language. But my understanding is, this is not a big part of life at Global Engineering.

hello and thank you for your reply… We looked into the global engineering, but it is a little more involved in a 2nd language then she cares to be. I still a bit confused about the honors program In Smith Hall. Is there something she needs be apply for, she was offered to be in the program, but we never applied. Is it that it caters all kids in all types of majors?
