Housing and scholarships

I have confirmed my intent to enroll and now i'm going onto the next step to attend and have a couple of questions. Everyone here seems to have tons of experience and I would appreciate your advice.

I am about to apply for housing and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to select if given the option?

Also, does anyone have an idea about when the "automatic" application scholarships (such as the chancellors and presidents) are awarded? Will they be sooner than other ones since no other applications are necessary?

Thanks Everyone

I seem to remember the Chancellor’s and Presidential Scholarships took a while to come last year, maybe in January or February. We were hoping for the Presidential Scholarship for my son, but he only got offered the Chancellor’s Scholarship.

In terms of housing, my suggestion would be apply soon for housing if you want to get a dorm on the main part of campus around Farrand Field. Dorms that are good are Baker (where my son is), Libby, Farrand…What is your major? Sewell is great too but it is far away from things according to my son. Do not apply late as you will get stuck with Williamsville which is off campus. Have you researched the dorms and the various RAP’s? (Resident Academic Programs). They require an extra fee but I really think they are worth it. Especially since most likely you will only live in the dorms for the first year. There are a lot of other good dorms also on the main campus, I am just not as familiar with them. In the dorms with RAP’s, if you are part of the RAP, you have to take a class in the dorm each semester. Some of the dorms have RAP’s in the dorms have 100 percent mandatory participation, others have the majority of the residents in the RAP with some students just living in the dorms and not participating in the RAP. Check out the dining and housing website and it will explain it all to you. My son is in Baker, with an environmental emphasis, but he is actually an aerospace engineering major. He did not want to apply for the Honors Engineering Dorm since he did not want to just live with other engineering students. Baker provided him with the desirability of being in a good central location, across from Farrnad Field, a short walk to Folsom Field and most other things he wants to do. He also has been able to take electives in that dorm to satisfy his humanity requirement for the School of Engineering. It is an older dorm but fairly spacious rooms, no cafeteria in it but there is a cafeteria next door in Libby Hall.

I just remembered you are an aerospace engineering major as well. Well, then, certain of the dorms that have RAP’s only allow students in the College of Arts and Sciences to apply to be in those dorms. That lets you out. My son had as his choices last year this order: Baker, Libby, Engineering Quadrangle, and I can’t remember any more. You cannot apply for Sewell as that if for Arts and Sciences. You could apply for the Honors Engineering program if you want to get in that dorm, but that dorm is far away from the main campus. I saw where that dorm is…Not centrally located at all although the professor who lives there in that dorm with his family is supposed to be wonderful. I know someone who lives there and he doesn’t seem to be as happy as my son is in his dorm. The Engineering quadrangle is four small dorms around a quad, mostly used by engineering and science majors.

i’m currently a freshmen at cu and can help with housing. in my opinion the best dorms are as followed:

sewall (but some people don’t like it because it’s on the north side)

farrand

hallot (i’ve heard the rooms are smaller but it’s seriously ten feet from c4c which is soooo nice when it snows)

baker & libby (i’ll put them on the same level. a lot of kids love baker, but i live here and am transferring to farrand so it’s a toss up)

i would say you’re pretty safe with almost anything, just under NO circumstances live in willvill! it’s absolutely dreadful! also, kitt commons is really far away and it sucks getting to class if you’re not in 100% math courses, which no one is)… i hope that helped <3

Good advice teddyvoughn but he is an engineering major so he cannot apply for Farrand or Sewall as I am pretty sure you have to be in the College of Arts and Science to apply for those dorms. Not sure about Hallett though…

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back but thank’s for the advice! I stayed in Libby over the summer at an engineering program and really liked it’s location. I think i’m between baker and libby if given the choice.

And teddyvoughn, sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is c4c?

C4C is the new Center for Community. It houses many offices but the main draw is the new dining hall there, referred to by the students as C4C. It has 9 different types of ethnic choices of food including Chinese, Japanese, Italian, etc. My son eats there almost every night and usually at lunch too. He lives in Baker and is liking it, but Libby is right next door so you can’t go wrong with either. But Libby is a performing Arts RAP so will have those kind of students in it. Libby does have its own dining hall and my son eats there pretty much every morning for breakfast.
