My housing application says the same thing and I emailed housing about it. They said that it's not a problem, they know I'm a transfer, and that my status will be updated officially later. They told me to just fill out my application normally and submit it. You'll be okay. :)

I'm not planning on choosing my roommate, so I didn't consider that before. In my case, I think they'll change the freshman status to transfer status before roommates are randomly assigned. If you want to choose your roommate, you should probably email/call housing and ask them what to do.

The freshman status thing worried me too, but they told me it wasn't a big deal. So I assume everything will work out.

I'm under the assumption that it's optional and that many people opt for Cornell assigning a random roommate. Some people may not trust Cornell's judgement and wish to find a roommate on their own, I guess. In the housing application website, you can send a message to matching roommates--I assume this is how potential roommates get to know one another.

Maybe I'm wrong and most people do choose their own roommate? (A current Cornell student could probably verify this for me...)

Everyone that's a first-year student is classified as freshman on the housing system. Transfer=first year student->Freshman. I wouldn't worry about it unless they put you in a North Campus dorm excluding the program houses. Very few first year students chose a specific roommate, but after that majority want to room with specific people.
