Housing Application: What have I done?! .___.

I’m sorry - I don’t know where I should post this. The UMBC forum on CC has been pretty inactive recently

I’ve been accepted to two schools (UMD and UMBC) but at the moment, I think that I’ll most likely go to UMD. I filled out the housing application form for UMD but I thought - maybe just in case, I will fill out the housing application form for UMBC as well.

The first thing I saw when I logged into the housing website for UMBC was an Billing Notification for $200.00 with an invoice number attached, and I need to pay up by April 15th. I honestly freaked out b/c I did not submit any housing forms whatsoever and I know that neither of my parents did anything, either.

I asked my brother (who went to UMBC) if this happened to him - and he said no, UMBC did not immediately put an invoice into his account when he was accepted.

The thing is that when I did the housing apps for UMD, they didn’t charge me - at least not yet. It said that if I don’t go to UMD, I just have to cancel before a certain date. They didn’t tell me that I needed to pay anything, yet.

I guess my questions are -

  1. Is this normal - is this just UMBC telling me that this is how much the housing deposit will be?
  2. Exactly what is this supposed to mean? ex. I only have to pay if I’m going, right? Especially considering that I didn’t submit any housing forms nor did I accept my admission to UMBC.
  3. Would declining my admissions offer now possibly fix the problem?

I realize that asking admissions would be my best bet, but I may just be overreacting - so that’s why I’m asking here. I’m hesitant on contacting admissions, considering that it took them 2 months to respond to a different email about a scheduling issue/dropping a class - but I will if that’s what it takes to fix this then I will ask.

Never mind - ignore this. I’ll ask my GC

Yes that’s the deposit they want by April 15. As I understand it, failure to pay is your way of telling them you’re declining admission. Pay a deposit at UMD if you’re absolutely sure you can pay for it and you’re going there.
Congrats UMD is a good school.

@OspreyCV22 Thank you for your response - that helps a lot! I guess regardless of what I’ll do, I’ll be ignoring UMBC’s bill and I’ll probably pay for UMD soon. Once again, thank you!
