I am going to be freshman this year and I want to know everything about housing.
Which dorm has a a/c? What is the best dorm in Freshman class? How does the housing application works? How can I get single dorm?
Is there a back up plan if you dont get a single room? Can I waive my residency if criteria on the website doesnt meet?
I’m going to be a freshman too! I did ED housing and went to precollege so I know a bit about the dorms and housing application from my own experience.
Dorms with A/C: South & East Hall. These are also the only dorms that are suite style/have semi-private bathrooms.
Best dorm: It’s definitely a matter of opinion. The Hill Houses, Nickerson & Homer, as well as South & East all have their positives! Hill Houses are more independent and have much bigger rooms. Nickerson has pretty good sized rooms. Homer is the unofficial party hall if that’s your thing. South you don’t have many stairs to go up. East is directly connected to the Met.
Housing application process: You don’t get to choose your housing, it’s random. You can choose a roommate if need be. You can request a single, but they normally only give them for medical concerns, which you have to fill out paperwork for. But, from looking at the paperwork myself and considering applying for a single, there is a section that allows you to let them know what would happen if your request isn’t granted (i.e. You’d have to live off-campus as a result). None of the requests are guaranteed to be fulfilled, though. I would have a back-up plan if you don’t have a medical concern, and possibly look into roommates before it’s too late! I found my roommate and I think we’re going to be great friends and roommates! I believe you can put a prospective roommate down on the application if your request of a single doesn’t get approved, just in case.
