Housing Application

hi! Just a few questions about the housing application if anyone is willing to help :slight_smile:

Do any parents or students know generally about how long after I commit and submit the enrollment deposit will I receive the link to the Housing Application?

When does the Housing Application become available if say I committed now? Beginning of April?

Also, i know that even though the UMich website states that “housing applications are given a random number to determine the order of housing assignments”, has anyone had any experiences where if you submit the Housing application earlier (ex. early April) you’ll have a better chance of getting your preferences?

Thank you!

My understanding is that they absolutely don’t give preference to earlier applicants. And yes, you should have it by early April. The website says:

After U-M receives your enrollment deposit, we will send you an email with a link to the University Housing application. If you’ve submitted your enrollment deposit and waited three weeks but have not received an email (and it’s after April 4rd), email us at housing@umich.edu. Make sure you include your U-M ID number.

I will say they don’t give preference to earlier admits but it seems like “a lot” of early admits get to be on central campus. Coincidence?

@Knowsstuff

Thanks! Do you know when is considered early?

@TacticalPotato. Not really but once my son was accepted he sent it the deposit like right away from what I. Remember. Him and all the people he knows did the same thing and all ended up on Central Campus.

@Knowsstuff

Ah well thank you for the info! I hope it’s not too late for me to get a better chance at ending up on Central Campus. I just committed and sent the deposit a few hours ago :slight_smile:

Also, based on your experience do you know when the best time to attend orientation (to get classes) is? And when to move in? Thanks! I’m from NJ.

@TacticalPotato. As far as orientation goes. Earlier is definitely better. They claim they have enough classes to go around but do it earlier. Sign up now since the spots go fast. My son didn’t believe me and was the last group. He didn’t get some classes initially but was the first on the wait list and then got in.

As far as move in they will give you move in dates. Just whatever works for you. There is something cool you could do though to meet people. If you volunteer to help others move in, there is like some leadership thing you can sign up for and you go early to school so you can move early, meet people, be on campus early etc.

BTW - congrats!! ??

@Knowsstuff Thank you so much! Where did your son end up on Central?

He was at West Quad or as I call it the Michigan Hotel. It’s really nice. It’s very close to classes and closer to the stadium.

He is on North Campus this year and actually likes it. But he is a realist anyway. He will be fine wherever he is at.

IIRC, my kid submitted the housing app mid-April and got Central Campus housing late July, early August, which was a VERY long time to wait.

Orientation spots fill up quickly. As @knowstuff suggests, earlier the better, but they do reserve spots for students with later orientation dates like my kid, but got the desired schedule anyway.

That what they say but Calc 1 ran out of spots supposedly two years ago.

Bummer. DC got AP credit for Calc 1 and 2, so missed out on that “fun.” ?

There’s a 3-class sequence for bio, which can be taken out of sequence, which DC had to do, because of class availability. Otherwise, no other issues so far. But DC has sophomore registration in the next week or two. So stuff can still go wrong. ?

There is no correlation between early admit and housing selection. My daughter was admitted under EA, submitted her housing application on the first day it was available, and did not get her housing assignment until the second week of August. And it was for North Campus.
