Housing Assignments Are Up!!!

I think the program just means that there are more advertised opportunities in your dorm for arts related events. It also means that there will most likely be a larger number of music-minded people in your dorm than normal... which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'll let someone who actually knows what they're talking about give you the actual details.

Alspaugh! woooo!

Wow, a lot of people in Alspaugh this year. :p I lived on the 2nd floor last year. Alspaugh was definitely the party dorm, but it is sooooo fun. The location is great (across from the Marketplace and next to Lilly), and rooms are big. My room had a sort of "hallway" about 4 feet long, a result of the huge walk-in closet in the corner. My room itself was a big square with plenty of room. The washing machines and dryers are on the 2nd floor, and there's a kitchen, common room, and study room downstairs. Professor Cook-Deegan is the faculty-in-residence, and he's really cool. I miss the 'spa. :(

so are most of the RAs in Alspaugh pretty chill (regarding alcohol)?

Well, bgrill, none of us can say that for certain since the RAs change every year. But for the most part, if you're not banging on their doors at 4 in the morning screaming "I'M 18 AND I HAVE ALCOHOL" they'll be pretty cool. I heard a couple of horror stories about RAs, but those were few and far between. Someone on my hall passed out head first in a trash can one weekend, and the RA woke her up the next morning to help her back to her room. I mean, all the RAs in my dorm were awesome this past year. But yeah, I think that RAs for the most part tend to be pretty chill. I mean, they're college students too -- ranging in age from seniors (the main perk of that being that they may be willing to use their 21+ age to your advantage) to sophomores (practically your age, sometimes even the same age or maybe even younger).

I got Blackwell (and I want to thank Bandcampgirl for the pics too)

I'm going to be an RA in Blackwell on the second floor. Ask here if you have any questions.

Hey Kirill, I'm not gonna be in Blackwell, but I heard it was pretty similar to Randolph (exactly the same?). Anyway, I just wanted to ask the approximate dimensions of a double in either/both building(s). Thanks.

Where are the pics that bandcampgirl posted that you guys are refering to? Could someone please link em to me.

I lived in Randolph last year and it's 100% the same dorm as Blackwell. The Pros look good on paper: AC and Elevators (more helpful than you would think, especially when you're coming back from a party). However, the rooms are tiny - there was a rumor goign around last year that a 2 man jail cell legally has to be bigger than the dorm rooms are. Aside from the desk, drawers, and bed, theres enough room for one person to lie on the ground. I'm not a big fan of the painted cinder block walls either. Hopefully you have a double, because the singles are even more cramped.

Nevertheless, you'll more than appreciate AC for the first and last month of school.

do the rooms come with mirrors? preferably full length :X
also, how do you loft a bed?

You get a ~0.5 sqm mirror at least in the Blackwell/Randolph dorms. For lofts, you either build something or buy it, i think its on sale at teh beginning of the year

<a href="http://www.loftsatduke.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.loftsatduke.com/</a></p>

There's the website which does a lot of the lofting at Duke. I myself bought mine from a friend, which I believe she got from them. Basically you just put together that whole wooden structure and place the bed frame on top. I really liked my bed lofted...it was a lot of fun and added a new dimension to our room.

In regards to mirrors...most of the dorms had a full length one somewhere on each floor, which us girls always surrounded on weekend nights...lol.

bandcampgirl-for those of us in Randolph and Blackwell, what are the essentials beside a fridge/microwave. Are the beds already lofted or do you buy them and what kind/where is the best place based in your experience. Also, pics, please. Thanks.

Hey, so I found this site last night... it's like a wiki-pedia for Duke. I figured the upper classmen could contribute to the East Campus dorm pages so that the 2010ers could use them for reference instead of asking the same questions 20 times.

<a href="http://www.duiki.com/index.php?title=Main_Page%5B/url%5D">http://www.duiki.com/index.php?title=Main_Page</a></p>

Ah! The guy who made that site lived in my dorm this past year...haha. Cool.

EDIT: Ooh yeah, and on the site he mentions a perk that I totally loved but never thought to mention..."Blackwell Arch is the most popular informal performance venue on East." There was a period of time where I think we had an a cappella group singing in our arch every night - and if you wanted to hear it but were too busy (probably working) to make it down there, you could just open your window and hear it while studying in your room. It was fun. Especially during finals time, when the torture that was Calculus studying was sort of lessened by the Pitchforks' "Sing til someone pukes" marathon that lasted in our arch for HOURS (literally, until someone in the group puked). But anyway, yeah -- if you live in Blackwell, that's totally a perk (that is, if you like music). There are definitely a cappella groups & bands that play in our arch very often -- but don't worry about it being TOO distracting, since performances usually only lasted for about 30-45 minutes (the perfect amount of time for a refreshing study break).

Can someone please send me the picks of blackwell too.

Thanks in advance

If you guys message me your e-mail addresses, I can forward you the pictures that Bandcampgirl had sent of her cute Blackwell dorm.

Did anyone get roommate info yet?

roomate info is assigned with the dorm assignment. u just had to click roomate on the left side of the app. maybe you got a single and don't get a roomate?
