Anyway, Im really not the right person to ask. You might want to call admissions.

You find out roommates either through mail (which im hearing went out today), or the incoming first year/now that im enrolling website found here:

i called admissions and they said that those aren’t finalized (the letter you should get in a few days is, though - they mailed this week). SIO info can change during processing, etc.

I REALLY hope that mine changes… I got Hammerschlag double… that was all the way at the bottom of my list (literally, like it was below the non-frosh dorms too). Nowhere near my top 5.

They also said if you’re not happy with your housing once you get the letter, you can be put on a waitlist to switch to a different house but you still gotta go there in the fall.

as i mentioned, i called admissions and they said that those aren’t finalized (the letter you should get in a few days is, though - they mailed this week). SIO info can change during processing, etc.

i got my assignment of std dbl hammerschlag, im over the initial shock of getting hammerschlag and trying to make the best of it… hopefully it’ll be fun!

Just to make you all feel better - it’s not so much the dorms as the people that will make your experience great. DS has been in a few different dorms and enjoyed his time in the 'Schlag because of the friendliness and camaraderie of the other students in his hall. In the end, a compatible roommate and good socialization opportunities will completely outweigh carpets or AC or a few extra square feet of space (plus note how many sororities are on the hill).

In terms of room changes, if you really really want to change then put in your request ASAP. It takes a couple of weeks for everything to shake out, then they start down the list by dorm to fill openings. Keep in mind that initial roommate assignments are based on specific criteria, but filling openings is completely random. You can always take your name off the list if you choose to stay where assigned.

Scobell has some of the smallest rooms on campus (your bed will be lofted), but you get a gigantic desk the size of your bed. They also renovated the building somewhat recently, so it’s pretty nice. Just hope you get a corner room so you can have cross-ventilation between the two windows.

Also, enjoy walking up the hill in the winter when they don’t bother to salt the stairs, sidewalk, or driveway.

oh man… the smallest rooms on campus though… oh man…well i have a standard single… really wanted a prime single so i may be asking for a room change ASAP… but anyways do you know where the bigger rooms on campus are?

i’m trying to stay in a single room as much as possible… and what improvements did they make during renovation?

do you think there’s a way you can appeal to the university directly so that they can actually salt the stairs, sidewalk and driveway in the name of student safety? it’ll turn out to be a pretty big deal when someone falls and has a concussion because of it…

It’s just there’s a lot of campus to salt, and if you’ve got an 8:30 class across campus and it’s been snowing late, then you need to learn how to deal with slippery sidewalks.

Anyway, it’s pretty tough to get a single in the first place, so I wouldn’t stress out too much getting a prime single versus a standard. The standard singles were pretty tiny in Scobell, but were considerably better than the doubles. You pretty much get the same size as a double, minus the space where the other guy’s bed/closet would be. Biggest rooms on campus are in Donner and possibly Mudge. I think Donner only has eight singles total, so I wouldn’t count on getting in there.

however are there any considerable differences between prime singles and standard singles? also, how many singles does mudge have?

also… is there anyway you can actually see what your room looks like prior to moving in? it doesn’t have to be my actual room but another standard single in scobell that would be just like mine. that seems to be pretty practical so you have a sense of how much you can actually take from home without having to guesstimate how many things you’ll need without overcrowding your room.

also can anyone rank the single rooms in all male dorms from largest to smallest just so everyone has an idea of what to expect in comparison to other dorms?

I think primes don’t share bathrooms with an entire floor, instead they share it with another room or two. Not sure if housing services clean those ones or not; when I was at CMU I lived in Donner, Scobell, and Shady Oak.

You ought to be able to find some floor plans on the housing website for each room style to help give you an idea. I know in Scobell the bed will be lofted, but I don’t think it is by default in any other the other dorms (though it probably is in Schlag).

Also, I wouldn’t be so concerned about getting a single. They’re pretty darned hard to get freshman year, and most people that live in singles never have anyone in there, so not many people are going to be aware of their size.
