housing assignments

Hey, I know it is hard to answer this but I was wondering what the chances of getting in my top 2 choices for housing if I sent in my application September 10th. Supposedly they assigned based on the date you applied & I feel like that is early but I just really want to get into Patterson, #1, or Columbia Hall. Do you think I have decent chances?? And also, if my roommate applied later than me but I get in and we are confirmed, will she still be roomed with me anyways?

You have a pretty good chance of getting your first choice.

I think they pull in roommates who applied later, but the whole roommate thing can get really messed up. I have a friend who got put in Columbia Hall, while her three other preferred roommates all got put in Bates West (where she wanted to be). She called and got moved, but things like that can happen.

I got my first choice dorm and I applied on October 15.

I also know people in Patterson who were placed there and didn’t even put it on their list. Housing can be really very strange sometimes, but you applied pretty early, so I think you have a good shot at it.

Are assignments confirmed at Orientation?

I think so. Last year was a total mess with them releasing the information before Orientation.

“Freshmen will find out what building they’ve been assigned to when they come for Orientation in June.” Facebook;

DD got her dorm assignment today. She’s in Capstone.

Was it posted on VIP?

^ Yes.

My daughter in honors found out around this time last year also. I think they assign the living learning communities first, which includes honors and capstone scholars because then they know how many other spaces available in these dorms for others. I do know that by mid-June they were just guaranteeing that students would know by their orientation dates and some people showed up to orientation with no advance knowledge of their assignments. Happy you’ve got yours though!

^Yep. My roommate didn’t find out until the day of Orientation. I actually met her when she was checking VIP for her assignment. The Housing Office had told her earlier in the day that she was in Maxcy, but didn’t give her a room number. Anyways, we were both getting our Carolina Cards and the same time and I jokingly said “Maybe you’re my roommate. I only got my assignment yesterday.” And she turned out to be my roommate.

A lot of people on my hall didn’t get their assignments until June. You should know by Orientation, but it literally could be the very last minute possible.

I remember going into my Foreign Language testing still without a housing assignment. I came out an hour and a half later at about 4:40 or so and I checked and I had an assignment.

My son E just found out he is in Capstone, floor 13 for the fall.

Just FYI, keep checking facebook class of 2016 groups for groups forming for dorms. These are sometimes closed groups just for residents and are a good way to introduce yourself to others living near you and maybe meet up with some of them at orientation. Last year by the time school started there was actually a room by room list of students for honors dorm on closed FB page. Some people last year found out who their roommates were this way instead of through VIP since many don’t check their USC email regularly.

I got my assignment yesterday. 13th floor capstone! Pretty sure i have a wonderful view of 5 points. If you go on VIP, they’ve taken down all the stuff to find out your rooming assignment. Word on the street it was a computer glitch

Nc7777, my son is also going to be in the Capstone dorm floor 13. He can’t wait to get there!!

Yeah, my D’s assignment disappeared too. Are they likely to change the room at this point?

They must assign the capstone students early - being a music major, my son applied to the Music LLC. When he goes in through the housing link via VIP, it doesn’t indicate an assignment for him. The Director of music admissions sent out a couple of e-mails showing the names of all the freshman who applied for the Music LLC, but there wasn’t a follow up saying who actually got assigned there…guess we find out when we go up for orientation on June 8?

For those of you who are living in the Capstone dorm - it’s an amazing experience! And if you’re on floor 13 I can tell you that your Resident Mentor is a really cool guy.

Where are the housing assignments posted?

VIP under housing if you’ve been assigned.

We have been looking and can’t find anything posted on VIP. My son has orientation tomorrow they say he will find out then. I hope so!!

It’s not directly on VIP.

You have to go onto VIP, then go to Personal, then go to Housing Application/Assignments, then click a link that will take you to a housing assignment page.

Housing definitely doesn’t make things easy. Never expect an email from them, even though they say they’ll send them out. They never did for anyone I knew last year, including myself.
