Where is everyone staying?! I just got my package in the mail today. I'm in 0305 a Barnard Hall in a Single Dorm. Anyone else?

woohoo for vandy/barnard. just an fyi, V/B is a mixed dorm with both singles and doubles. just got to say, i lived in V/B freshman year and that was the best place to live in my opinion. you will get to know practiaclly everyone within that dorm and i bet you'll like it.

Oh, wicked. Thanks so much - I know they are a bit smaller than Kissam as far as dorm size, but I thought the facilities looked a lot cleaner/newer. I feel even better about living there now :D 'preciate it.

i got into branscomb, i'm really excited about that. i'll be living in lupton.

Can anybody talk about Kissam vs. Vandy Barnard vs. Branscombe? Since assignment to a dorm for freshmen is pretty random, I guess there is nothing to say about the kids who live in the different dorms. But what about ammenities? How do the rooms vary? What are they like? What do you need to furnish a single?

mirimom-- are you or your d/s going to be a freshman this fall or in the future? because the conversation would be highly unrelevant after this fall since the freshman commons will be opening in the fall of 08.

in general, to answer your question, the ammenities are the same regardless of whether you are in a double/single. the size of the rooms vary but all in all they are comparable (ie a single is about 1/2 the size of a double). all rooms come with standard stuff --- beds, drawers, closet, desk for each student, bookshelf of some sort (usually part of the desk). in the singles there's really not much too room for any additional furniture (ie futons, etc) and all the rooms have AC that is controlled in each room.

Does anyone know if the fact that they are tearing down Kissam, do you think they will still be strict with the 'no nails' rule for the walls??

Actually, the rooms in Branscomb do not have AC controllers in each room. The rooms in Kissam do (except for some reason in Currey and 1 or 2 other halls, their is no "off" setting...you have to jam the fan strength switch between 2 other settings to turn it off), and I think the rooms in Vandy/Barnard have their own AC controllers too.

If Vanderbilt's love of money doesn't change (which I don't think it will anytime soon), I don't think they're going to change their no nails rule, or be any more lenient than before. I mean, Kissam has always been considered "temporary housing," and it's never stopped them from charging people for damages before.

What does that mean? Is it known as a bad building? Is it considered undesirable?

mirimom, the only freshman dorm I ever saw was in Kissam, but I can tell you a bit about that because my daughter was a freshman there two years ago. She impressed me with her ability to cram an amazing amount of stuff into what at first seemed to be a very small area. Her bed was lofted, and she put a futon in the space underneath, along with her fridge and microwave. She also had one of those large, padded round folding chairs (don't know how else to describe it). She purchased a 3-foot high set of plastic drawers (the kind with wheels) and found space for that, too.

She is an accumulator, so if she can manage in that small space, I think that anyone can! Random stuff I remember about Kissam: no elevator, and she was on the top floor. Move-in was a breeze for me as a parent because the Move Crew was amazing! The entire process was extremely well organized and run. Somewhere along the way she read that she should have a shower curtain to hang, because there were supposedly no closet doors - but when we arrived, there was a closet door, so that was odd. The air conditioning was great, the bathrooms less so.

A drawback: there was no laundry facility in her hall (Currey), so she wound up lugging it. Her experience in Kissam was generally very positive, and she thought it was particularly good for her to be in an all-singles hall.

frazzled1, I lived on the top floor of Currey last year! Strange to hear that she had a closet door, because there weren't any closet doors last year. Also, apparently last year was the first year that the furniture was moveable...before that, everything but the bed was built in.

Maybe she just never used the shower curtain? I know it's still in its Target packaging. There probably wasn't a door - she had so much stuff in the closet she never could have closed one.

Haha, yeah, that could be a possibility. I used the curtain I bought, but most of the time I left it open...I mean, who cares if people can see inside your closet? Also, whenever the door to my room was open, it blocked the closet anyways.

A word of caution - be careful about the bed risers. If I remember correctly, the ones with square openings fit the beds in Branscombs, while students living in Towers need ones with round openings. I hope someone will confirm or correct this as I am not 100% as to which ones fit where.

Can anyone tell me about dyer

Dyer is in Kissam quad, so it's all singles. The closets do not have doors, and the desk, dresser, and bed are all moveable. Theres a bookshelf built into the wall. The beds are loftable, meaning they're on a metal frame that could in fact support bunk beds, but there's only one bed attached. Some people choose to put a futon or lounge chairs under the bed, since it can be lofted so high. Dyer doesn't have laundry, so you'll have to go to Kissam (which has only a few washers and dryers, so it's usually full) or Vandy/Barnard. Any other questions?

Hey is anyone else in the upperclassmen towers??? Im in Carmichael towers II... whats it like there
I got put there because there were a lot of incoming freshmen and no place in the freshmen resident halls to put them...

are the single room beds in vandy/barnard able to be lofted too? like would there be enough room for a futon or chair if so?

No, the beds in Vandy/Barnard are wooden, like real beds, heh. The most you can do with them is bed risers, which will give you a few extra inches of space underneath. I haven't heard of anyone being able to fit a futon in Vandy/Barnard, even in a double.

What tools/materials are needed to loft a metal bed? Is this something that can be purchased used? Is it possible that someone would walk into a dorm room and find the bed already lofted?
