Matthews residents do come to Weld for laundry, I remember meeting Matthews people in our laundry room. He'll share a bathroom with maybe like 10 people? Much less than Weldians do. I loooove Matthews, it's my second favorite dorm (next to Weld, of course!). The outside and inside are both beautiful, and the rooms are spacious and very old-Harvard, which I love. It has a great location, too, right in the middle of the yard. Here are more stats on it: Matthews - Prefrosh.

Olgita...Apley Court is outside the Yard, closer to some of the upperclass houses, but it's still near everything else on campus (I personally don't think Harvard's campus is unmanageable in terms of walking everywhere, especially compared to a state school or something...so even those freshman dorms outside the yard are still close to it all and not too inconvenienced). There are less than 30 residents who all usually become very close. Apley is the most luxurious dorm, with a marble staircase and private bathrooms. Some more stats and pics: Apley - Prefrosh.

Spiffystars...Greenough is a union dorm, so as you rightly stated, it's outside of the Yard, although you're really only a little farther out. Like the other union dorms, what it lacks in ideal location, it makes up for in actual rooming situation. The rooms I've been in in Greenough are amazing and huge, with long carpeted hallways and extra rooms that can serve as living rooms, like apartments. More stats: Greenough - Prefrosh

Can anybody offer any inside information on Wigglesworth?

That's where I'll be next fall :)

h-bomber-

Thanks for the info on Mower!! Are there laundry facilities in the dorm? If not, what is close by?

Beach02 - you're going to be going to Stoughton for laundry. It's right across from you.

capitalistlove--which Wigg are you in? Wigg is a really long dorm, spanning almost the length of one side of the yard behind Weld and Boylston Hall on the side that borders Mass Ave. My Wigg friends always complained about being far from Annenberg and the sci center, but you're only like a minute farther than Weld is, so people really just exaggerate. You're very close to the River houses, Widener, and Lamont. The rooms are mostly quads, with two smallish bedrooms and a large common room and then an in-suite bathroom. It has vertical entryways, like most Harvard dorms, and goes up three floors. There are three basements for Wigg, each having various things like laundry or a common room, but you have to go outside to get to the basements that aren't directly under your own entryway. You're going to hear many tours and have tourists stare in at you a lot, especially if you're on the first floor (which many of my friends were) since tour buses tend to park along Mass Ave. You can just close your blinds, though. You also sometimes get the rattle of the T under you, but my friends didn't mind it much.

I've heard Weld is really spacious, and I saw the pictures of the inside of a couple of rooms. But, since I am trying to figure out how much stuff to bring with me, I was wondering if any past Weldies (Weldites? Welders?) would entertain a couple of questions:
-Do the bedrooms have bunk beds? (would under-bed storage still be useful?)
-How big are the closets? Are they built into the wall or is there a free-standing bureau?
-How many people share a floor bathroom?
Any other info on Weld would be appreciated :)

Thanks for the info on Weld! It's good to know that it's a pretty good dorm in terms of location and size and laundry facilities.

I second sciency! Any other pertinent or useful information?

harvard1636 -- Thank you for all of your info on Wigglesworth. I'm in entryway D, which I hear contains the music rooms, but not the laundry rooms. How is it in comparison to the other freshman dorms?

I suppose even if Wigglesworth turns out to be horrible, which I doubt, we'll at least have the coolest name :)

As a former Welder (Weldian, Weldie, etc. haha...we go by many names, no one has ever decided on one) I think I can answer your questions. The bedrooms have bunk beds theoretically, but I rarely see them actually set up that way unless there's a particularly small room or the people in the room have a tonnnn of stuff and they need lots of floor space. Weld's beds are detachable, and in most rooms you move into, they're already going to be set up as single beds (my suitemates and I kept them detached as singles). Under-bed storage is good if you have a ton of stuff and are worried about room for it all--I brought more storage than I needed (and I thought I had a ton of stuff, guess I was wrong), so I just sent it back home with my parents...better to come prepared. You can use those things that lift up your bed so drawers fit; I brought them but didn't even need them, while my roommate did use them.

Closets are free-standing bureaus in Weld, and each person gets their own. They have a shelf at the top and then a bar to hang stuff, so I put a shoe holder thing at the bottom to utilize all the empty space under my hanging clothes. You also get a tall set of drawers per person (four large drawers). Weld definitely has a great situation for clothes--I have A LOT of clothing, and it all fit. I would also suggest bringing/buying those plastic drawers, or something like them--my roomies who didn't have them ended up buying them once they got to school after seeing how large our suite was (if you need anything, there's a Target a short drive away).

If your floor is mostly your sex, you're sharing with about 30 other people I guess? I never once had to wait for a shower or to use the bathroom, though, so it works out (and worst case, you can use another floor). If you're that one suite who is on a floor with all of the opposite sex, you're sharing your bathroom with only your suitemates. Unlike in-suite bathrooms, ours get cleaned more often, which is a nice benefit to make up for the lack of private bathrooms.

Get excited for Weld--it's the best in my (admittedly biased) opinion. It's always a really social dorm, with amazing rooms and a perfect location, as well as all the facilities you need right in your basement. If I could pick any dorm to live in, it would be Weld, hands down.

Capitalistlove--ignore my raving about Weld haha. Wigg rocks too (and yeah, your dorm name is awesome). I like Wigg more than a lot of the dorms--you're right next to the square, which is convenient, and you're really close the the river houses. The common rooms are huge, which makes up for the fact that the bedrooms are not quite as big as the ones in some other dorms (I've been to manyyy parties in Wigg haha). Since it's only 3 floors, you also don't have the annoyance of walking up lots of stairs (it might sound lazy to complain about stairs but you'll be thankful..trust me, my 5th floor Matthews friends got very tired very fast). You're also right next to Lamont and Widener, which is amazing when it's late at night and you just want to get home. Try to take a class that meets in Boylston if at all possible (goes for the Weld people too)...it's awesome to roll out of bed at like 10:00 and get to your class in Boylston 30 seconds later and STILL be early.

Can someone tell me about Thayer???? I am in a double in Thayer - and I haven't seen much about it on this thread....would love to find out about the rooms....bathrooms....etc....I am on the second floor....
Thanks!

I sent you a private message about Thayer, bballgirl. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Does anyone have an opinion of Hollis? I haven't got info on my roommate yet, but my Proctor sent me an e-mail welcoming me.

Someone else posted this on another thread but I thought some of the people here would like to see it...

I have seen that, it is very cool to see some pictures. I was more looking for personal experience.

does anyone have any info on Canaday???

harvard1636, thanks a lot for the info on weld! =)

My D was in Thayer, great two room suite, good location for Annenburg etc. Her one big complaint was it's right next to the church and the bells ringing for no apparent reason and no apparent number!

Thayer is great ... close to the science center and Annenberg. Laundry is downstairs. It depends which side of the building you are on as to whether the church bells bother you.
