Hi, I'd like some insight on how the housing and the social life at the West and East campus are.
Any information would be much appreciated :)

I m so frustrated that ga tech does not offer single rooms to freshmen … I ll probably hate being with someone in a small room, having no privacy …

My D lives in East Campus and really likes the location. West Campus is closer to the CRC but further away from classes.
The rooms in her dorm are small -really small and I understand this is common for freshman housing throughout campus. She has a friendly floor and the bathrooms are kept clean. I don’t think there are any suite type dorms available for Freshman. There are some quads -but I don’t think they have their own bath or anything.

There is a kitchen in the dorm -but it is poorly equipped and gets kind of gross sometimes.

She eats at Brittain and North Ave dining halls.

She says that East campus is livelier that West.

Let’s just say you won’t get the action that Lelouch gets, but yeah east campus is more exciting.

DS lives on West campus. He likes it. Rooms are small but there is nice kitchen on the floor and laundry room in the basement. Building was renovated in 2012. When deciding on which dorms to choose you might want to look at the last time a building was renovated. The classes he took didn’t seem to be too far from his dorm. But if you are planning on joining a frat then it’s going to be a hike. Because they are on the east side. Also he doesn’t like the dorm food at all(he does think north ave has better food than the others) and is looking forward to being in an on campus apartment next year.:)

The housing situation is really not all that bad. I chose East over West and am really glad I did since I think things are more accessible to me. It’s livelier too and I’m not too affected if the buses aren’t running since everything is closer to walk to. In my opinion though, the co-ed dorms are better than the all male/all female dorms. It is a small space, for sure, but not impossible to live in. You get used to it and you get to experience dorm life which is what freshman year should be about!

@SnowApple Hey! I just confirmed my enrollment to Georgia Tech and now looking at housing. I am an international student and will major in CS.The whole housing this is really confusing. I prefer to live in the dorms over apartments. Could you suggest me which building will be better for me taking in account the quality and proximity to the college of computing.
@MichiganGeorgia Could you also help me with the housing? Being an international student campus visit is impossible. So it’s really confusing for me.
@ devileng My D is a freshman this year so I can share her experience. There are two distinct areas for residence halls, East and West campus. You should first decide which is better for you because they are very different. East is more active and social. It is closer to sports events and Greek life. I think it is also a bit closer to classes. West is quieter and has more green space. It is also closer to the campus rec center and intramural sports. Both sides of campus have Freshman Experience dorms (which you should definitely do!) So decide which side of campus is right for you, pick freshman experience dorms (you pick 5 choices and hope you get one of them) and then go online to check out the choices. Georgia tech is not known for luxury dorms. My D didn’t really care where she lived, but she couldn’t be happier. She is in Caldwell on west campus. It is a coed dorm and seems to be very social. She has made friends from all over. Good luck!
@devileng - DS was on the west side freshman year. He picked his dorm based on when it was renovated. He was in a co-ed dorm ( Fitten). He wanted to stay on the west side this year but there wasn’t room. He is moving back to the west side next year. Look at when each dorm was renovated also I would look at the floor plans of each dorm. For example Fitten has a laundry in it and a small kitchen on the floor. I believe some don’t. Although they may have changed that.
@MichiganGeorgia Thank you so much for your prompt response. I have been researching about the housing and I came across this information that most of the freshman activities and other freshman students are in the East side. Could you tell me something about that?
@devileng - Not really. All I know is that most of the kids who go to our high school pick the west side for freshman housing. We live in about 35-45 minutes away. I think they pick the west side because it’s quieter and supposedly that way they “may” studying more which means they will have a better chance of keeping the Zell Miller scholarship. I’m not sure if it really works out that way or not though.
This will answer all:

My D was on east freshman year and liked it. Coed by floor. Her dorm seemed to be very social. She did not go greek.
There was not a Laundry in her dorm -but one very close. She was very close to dining and classes. Her room was very small.
Thank you so much everyone for all your inputs. They helped immensely! Thank You!
Hey, I am looking into rooming in the East campus.
My list so far
- Glenn
- Towers
- Harrison
- Field
- Mathson
- Pery
Is there anything anyone would say I should change? I was looking into Hanson too. Should I replace that with another school on my list and why?
@devileng - my son has put in for West, with Fitten as his first choice. I can’t remember the rest of his list. He’s also CS. Your paths will cross soon!
@treehuggermom That’s awesome! I put Fitten as my first choice too. After talking to a lot of people I realized that West should be the best for me. So most of my choices are from the West. Oh! He is in CS as well? Yeah. Our paths will cross soon then.
