Housing at Henderson?

So, I've read about Henderson's being the Wellness House and I was wondering if it might be a bit boring to live at Henderson.
Anyone who lived there, how was it? Is it actually full of people who don't believe in drinking of partying?(Although I highly doubt that's possible)
How is the social life at Henderson and what are the people like there?
How are the requirement programs for living in Henderson? Are they annoying?

Also, is Henderson popular among freshman? I know that there's a freshman floor, but should I go to a dorm that has more freshman?
Overall, do you recommend living in Henderson?
I'm looking for a dorm that has prime rooms for freshman, decent social life, and if possible, a/c.
I've considered Mudge, but I don't really like long walks and Stever's rooms are too small.. Morewood sounds great, except for the fact that it doesn't offer prime rooms to freshman. :/
Sorry for being so picky haha

Ah-- the dorm choice threads-- already?! There’s several threads last year to review and I recommend doing so as well as checking out a blog by Amy Revac (sorry if I butchered that name) on CMU admissions pages last year - she did a story about each dorm with pictures.

To answer your ??
First keep in mind- prices differ and financial aid package/CMU budget is based on your being assigned to a room type known as “standard double”.

Henderson has only 60 people (20-25 freshman) but is part of a group of 6-7 smaller dorms on “the Hill” that comprise a community for purposes of freshman orientation and getting together.
Henderson rooms have A/C, private (prime) bathroom types and are co-ed. Some people elect it by choice and others often overlook the dorm and are “stuck” (their perception) there b/c of being last on the list of housing assignments. The healthy choice stuff has included massage. The housing writeup says there are mandatory wellness programming-- but that’s so minimal – once a semester. Basically, RA enforces the no-drinking the same as any dorm where there are under 21 year old adults residing. If you want A/C and a private bath-- that’s the dorm for you. It also has a nice gym with newer equipment. Location- well three flights up the top of a hill is a challenge in winter - compared to a longer walk flat from mudge-- your pick I suppose…nothing over 10 minutes to campus - most distances are 5 minutes if you aren’t a snail.

The first thing to decide at CMU is if you want a “standard” or “prime” room-- meaning, bathroom down the hall or private bathroom accessed through an internal corridor between your room and another room - more private. The shower and toilet will be used by you only and no one will be in that space (or within earshot) when you are (in less you are cool with roomies I suppose about shaving while you shower). If you are too stuck on looking your best at 2 am or 7am then don’t go down the hall to pee, brush your teeth or take a shower but select the “prime” room. And worse yet, if the thought of using a public bathroom for the most private (and sometimes noisy) moments gives you the shudders, then take a prime over standard room. But most of college life is about shared bathrooms at some point and it’s not a big deal.
Personally, I think this has to be the first thing to decide over all the other factors such as location, roomsize or co-ed or not.

Of the Freshman Dorms
Prime: Henderson, Mudge
Standard: Donnor, Morewood, Stever, all other dorms on the Hill

Next choice item to consider: Co-ed or single sex dorm:
of the freshman dorms
Hammerslag and Scobell - male only
Boss or Mcgill used to be female only-but now it’s some leadership thing - so not sure where that’s going next year
All other dorms are co-ed by door - meaning men and women on the floor-- can be opposite wings as in Stever or every other door as in Mudge. Morewood has specific floors for men or women. Reality, there’s no curfew, so even in a single sex dorm, you should fully expect that there will be people of both sexes on your dorm floor at any given time of day or night. Hence, this is really not a factor.

Size:
Donner and Mudge – larger
(read earlier threads-- lots of “rumors” about a donnor smell related to the proximity of the garbage dumps-- reality- perhaps only an issue when the temperature is over 90 and you open your window on a day where the dump is overflowing-- nonsense issue).
Both donner and mudge are two of the older dorms.
Stever - absolutely puny (A/C makes up for it I think) but very clean
All else-- average size

Location-
It’s a perimeter-- nothing is terribly far-- 10 minute worst case for slowpoke or lingers
Obviously Morewood closest of the FRESHMAN dorms. Don’t consider the food on site in Morewood a plus-- b/c the underground food is DISGUSTING and only valuable when it’s 10 degrees outside. So if food location is on your “pro” list for Morewood- take that off your list of pros ASAP. Printer cluster in Morewood - but for $35 you have a printer in your room for any late night printing in a cold day.

Bottom line-- absolutely,
ALL DORMS are going to be fine- you’ll make friends anywhere.
Decide what’s most important to you: bathroom type, co-ed, roomsize or location – and then rank order appropriately.

If you have any special needs-- sleep issues, crazy allergies, some form of diagnosed emotional health issue, that may get you a single or an A/C room. The chance at getting a single as a freshman is very much close to zero (other than a few ED applicants). A single is about $1600 more per year than a double room. Expect a double room.

Room choice forms are not due until MAY 31 and there is absolutely zero advantage to submitting it any sooner. The date of your admissions deposit determines the order of housing assignments.
The FB 2015 page will very likely get 1000 new faces end of March and threads on seeking a roommate may appear. Most people wing it and go random.

All of this is only from a parent perspective–and other posters will chime in. I’ve been inside several of dorms (visiting my two kids and meeting their friends/picking up friends in carpools on breaks home- ) so have a bit of feel for the size, location. The only dorm I’ve not been inside is Hammerschlag nor any of the off campus apartment.s All dorms felt like a community and so no one seems any “closer” or “more friendly” than another. Some posters here have stated it’s best to avoid Welch or the quiet floor of Mudge b/c it may attract a less social type-- but it may be the case that it simply attracts people with sleep issues-- who knows. But that’s something to consider.
In terms of “cleanliness” I still echo my sentiments last year on CC, I think Morewood is absolutely filthy- -bathrooms are gross and the dorm is older. I have been in at least 10 Morewood rooms – both towers and I think the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting (male or female rooms - just plain gross). But then again, that’s a mom’s perspective. I think Henderson and Stever feel cleaner- and that’s “feel” simply b/c they are new.
I suppose the Residence on Fifth (Rez) will have that feel too.

Bottom line-- I think Henderson is fine-.

My room in Donner was on the first floor directly above the dumpsters. Some days it would be a little rank, but I generally got much worse smells coming in from the bathroom across the hall.

Also, the entire east wing is away from the dumpsters, and half the rooms in the west wing are on the opposite side of the building.

The huge rooms more than made up for it, though.

Glad we put that Donnor stink rumor to rest!
(You can see Donnor rooms in a recent movie with CMU grad Sarah Jessica Parker – and Dennis Quaid?? Awful film, cannot remember the title-- about a presumed english professor-- ).

Now perhaps someone can confirm or deny the existence of Andrew Carnegie’s soul floating in the Mudge Piano room…evil laugh

I currently live in Henderson. I really enjoy it; no annoying drunks on the weekends and such. The rooms are very nice, they sort of differ in size so it is a bit luck of the draw. (Though even the smallest room is comparably larger than rooms in say Stever)

Rooms are suite style, meaning you share a bathroom with 3 other people. This is good if you have hygienic and cooperative suite-mates.

Only downside is that there are fewer people, so if you rely on running into people in the dorm to meet people, the social aspect sort of sucks. However, if you are a sociable person this shouldn’t make a difference since it def is not isolated from other housing communities. You meet other people around campus too and from classes and such.

If you have more specific questions let me know.

Wow, thanks for the responses; I didn’t expect them to be this nice.
I definitely need a prime room, so considering everything, I guess I’ll be selecting Henderson. Thanks!

Are Welch and Henderson twin buildings by any chance? I wanted to see Henderson’s double prime rooms, but Henderson isn’t on the virtual tour and I couldn’t find any pictures of its interior either. :(

Henderson got busted for weed and booze this past weekend. I only noticed because I am an editor for the paper, so I get to edit the crime report each week.

[Crime and Incident - The Tartan Online](Crime and Incident - The Tartan)

Some of the house might be substance-free, but apparently not all of it is. :p

Does Henderson have printers? I forgot to ask this

Printers and computer rooms at CMU are plentiful - termed “clusters”.

There are no clusters however up on “the hill” (it’s not really a hill by normal standards…you’re not trudging mount everest to get there).
Morewood yes-- possibly Donnor-- not sure, you can search on the CMU site for the list.

Walmart, target, etc. all have many excellent lexmark, HP etc printers on the opening move-in weekends $ 30 - $50 depending upon features. You will not do much printing for most classes and the only real need for a printer is if you are finishing something at 3 am in the dead of winter. Both my S and D have one-- D used hers freshman year a few times-- she did not take it back with her Sophomore or Junior years. S has his - and it’s still in the box up in his closet with the package of paper we purchased! It was $29 at Target. We should return it!

Welch looks nothing like Henderson - henderson was remodeled and Welch is older. The rooms in Henderson a basic rectangle, think Stever but 1.5x bigger - some rooms even twice the size. The supporting falls are every two windows (on schematics for the building) so some rooms are slightly larger and some a bit of smaller. The bathrooms are as large as the room-- I saw one of these a few years ago when picking up D’s friend for a ride home for spring break-- wow - super huge bathroom and spanking brand new clean.
Every room in Henderson has one bed lofted with full size desk underneath and the other bed normal with free standing desk. There is room to unloft - but it’s tight. See schematics diagram on housing website- it’s accurate.
If you post to the FB Henderson pages for 2014, 2013 you will probably get someone to post a picture. Or PM the other poster in this thread to share some pics.

Oh- here’s the link to Amy’s blog…it’s really great! Has some pics-- but none of Henderson.

[Amy Revak: May 2010 Archives](http://www.enrollment.cmu.edu/admission/blogs/arevak/2010/05/)

All CMU rooms have the same furniture-- bed or a bunk (if you want to with roomie), a dresser, desk/hutch, lamp and garbage can. Some have built in closets and others free standing wardrobes link Stever.

If a prime bathroom is essential - your only choice as a freshman is Henderson or Mudge. Or off campus in the apartments-- one for freshman is “Residence on Fifth” which is getting great review. A 10 minute walk. Tartan has some pictures in a recent article.

As Kate shared–and as I noted-- some Henderson residents aren’t there b/c of the substance free deal. People drink in college–but it’s unlikely your roomie will be a partying vomiting queen.

Back when I was in Donner there was no cluster, you had to go to either Resnik or West Wing in order to print (whichever one of those is closer to the UC, I could never remember which was which).

The exception to this is during the winter after a snow storm. CMU is usually pretty lax about salting/plowing the sidewalk and stairs that lead to the dorms on the hill, and I can say it was much more annoying going up to my third floor room on the top of Scobel in the middle of winter than my first floor room in Donner.

There is indeed a printer in Donner. I used it frequently my freshmen and sophomore year. The closest clusters to the Hill would probably be West Wing or CFA.

But really, it may seem like a problem to you now, but distance isn’t a big deal at all at CMU. The school is quite small and you can get from one end of the school to another in about 10 minutes walking, max. I don’t know why you wouldn’t consider Mudge because it’s a nice place. It’s not really not far at all. You’ll see if you decide you come here.

Best of luck

i live in Henderson and love living here. I know having an temperature control isn’t that attractive, but I’d love to have some control over the temperature of the room. The room in Henderson is relatively small, but it’s very comfortable. Most rooms I believe are prime doubles, where you will share the bathroom with other 3 or less people, and compared to the standard style, I think I like having less people sharing the bathroom.

Also, there is an exercise room in the ground floor, though not having the printer, Donner is so close that you can just wall down the stairs and cross the street to get to the printer.

In general, Henderson is quiet, so a good place to study. However, if you want to hang out with your friends, I think Morewood E-tower won’t be a bad choice?

The latest edition of the Tartan has a special section on housing. It begins on page 10.

http://thetartan-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/edition/pdf/209/tartan_web_2-14-11.pdf</a></p>

I just saw that the article didn’t mention Henderson having laundry rooms, but I saw that Henderson does have laundry rooms on other unofficial sites. Does it have laundry rooms?

There’s a laundry room in every dorm and laundry is free in all dorms.
In basement or first floor of most dorms. Smaller dorm like henderson a bit easier to know who it is that took your stuff out of the wash when you forgot it about …

It’s not free in the off campus housing such as Cat Man.

Not sure about the Rez-- is it free there too?
