I am ahead of the curve, but can someone tell me which of the housing options for freshman at Penn is desirable and why? Penn is my first choice, but I have a friend applying to Princeton (boo hiss) and is sneering at me saying the housing sucks at Penn. I need help to combat this nasty potential P-Tiger.

Almost all freshmen want to live in the Quad. Anywhere in the Quad.

African Americans sometimes prefer Dubois, although it's pretty far from the essential classroom buildings.

Or, if you are very independent, value a larger living space, and/or would prefer not to share a bathroom with 10+ people, maybe you want a high rise.

People who study hard, want to be near a dining hall, and aren't necessarily into the socializing aspect of college life, might request King's Court.

If you request Hill, you're a masochist.

There are others, but Stouffer/Mayer are mostly grad student and upperclassmen housing as I understand it.

Feel free to message/IM with more questions

housing in the quad is better than any of the dorms at my friends colleges that ive been to or seen in pictures

Which college house in the Quad is the best?

Is Ware house part of the Quad?.....god I sound stupid.

No stupider (is that a word?) than I do. Ty u guys for your info.

Go Quakers!

Fisher Hassenfeld, Ware, and Riepe (Spruce).

As for best house, I mean, the fact that Fisher is Upper Quad and Riepe is Lower Quad may make a difference geographically. (Ware is in the middle and thus equidistance from both gates). Plus different buildings are build differently and at different times, so you have a wide variety in rooms. Then again, there is are differences between rooms in the came college house, and even hall. So, I have my personal preferences, but anywhere in the Quad is good.

Go Quakers is right! Puck Frincton!

Riepe.........it is good. Nice courtyard and easy in/out.

you know how the little connected buildings in the quad has names, which house is the Franklin in?

I'm really not sure but I think more dorms in Riepe and Ware have sinks than ones in Fisher. I could definitely be wrong about that. Fisher (37th) is closer to the dining hall than Riepe (36th) and Ware is in the middle but everything pretty much varies. It doesn't really matter.

Nah, I live in Fisher and as far I've seen everyone has sinks. The upper-level floors have bigger rooms too (as I can happily report).

Basically, come to the Quad. There's no reason not to request it: It is the most beautiful, it has AC, (in my case) huge rooms (though some have small rooms), and the freaking people. There are so many people here, and if you live in the Quad then it'll be much easier to hang out with people from your classes, because a good percentage of frosh live here.

Fisher rocks the house

oh, and Franklin house is in Fisher Hassenfeld.

Also, though Quad rocks the heezy, I know plenty of people who claim to enjoy their lives at kings court-english house or Hill. I personally think Hill, in addition to being one letter away from it, looks like Hell. But in the Quad, basically every building is independent from every other one, whereas in Hill each floor is one big hall, so that would foster greater community probably.

The people in KC are def cool too. I wouldn't characterize them in any particular way (nerdy, non-social, etc). They're just like everyone else, but with not-as-good housing. Not everyone can have Quad ;)

In order of preference: Riepe, Fisher, Ware (i dont think there are sinks in ware, and trust me, you will LOVE having a sink in your room)

Living in KC myself, my last choice behind the quad and highrises, I can say that it's definitely not the "nerdy" dorm. However, there are the STWING and Huntsman floors, which seem nerdy, and of which I have yet to venture to.

So in conclusion, anywhere but Hill is good.

Thanks everyone. Great info.

Go Quakers!

chocoman,

So how do you like King's Court?

I like it a lot. It's close to all my classes, I really enjoy my floor (made some great friends so far), no walking to go eat is nice even if the KC dining hall has the least selection, and i love spending time in our wonderful courtyard.

yeah, ive gotta admit, quad is somewhat far from our dining hall (1920 commons, which you get sick of really fast anyway), so hill and KC-EH have that over us.

how early do u have to apply for housing (after ur admitted early descision for example) to get your number one choice?

its pretty much random i think. i was prob one of the last to submit the housing form all together, but I got my number one choice. while others who got in early decision got their last choice. It's all luck.

But what I will say is that theres this section where you can write a note to be attached with your form. I wrote about how I wanted to apply for a certain residential program in Fisher Hassenfeld, but could not because it was filled before I was admitted. And somehow, I got into Fisher (though not as a part of that program)! So I think that note helped me.
