What’s it like? Is it tough for a freshman to get into a dorm? Do most freshmen live in dorms? Are some dorms quieter than others? Do students tend to live in housing with other students in the same major?

I checked on Wikipedia and it seems that they're actually expecting a shortage of dorms this year, so some people are going to have to live off campus their freshman year.

yeah, that site would be MUCH more helpful if current students would post reviews, haha. As far as what I know to this point, some of the residence halls have students from similar majors, but it doesn't go as far as making them exclusive to students of a major. At first thought, I saw lots of benefits with that because you'd live with the people who you have classes with, makes having a study group MUCH easier, and gets you off on the right foot in trying to find your niche in the school.

Fall 07...i'm so excited!

oh and the april 19 open house should give us some good insight as well

On campus housing fills up very fast. You should submit the online housing application the first day it's open (April 17th I believe). Check the FAQ section here for more info http://www.housing.calpoly.edu/
Congrats to you all!!

You have a better chance to get off campus residence.
Look into Stenner Glenn or Mustang village.
Dorm is always full.
Useless to try.

Do you guys think it's better to choose your roommate prior, or to have them select one at random?

Also, does anyone know what the conditions and size of the dorms are like?

off campus residence would be apartments and the like, right? I'm coming in from out of state so it's gonna be hard to find a roommate...--

oh i wouldn't worry too much about that mystic, even though there was that study saying that college students are becoming more narcissistic I'm sure you'll find friendly people at slo, I know I can't wait to meet all the new people!

i would personally suggest you guys to try to locate a roommate to live with.. i've heard and witnessed quite a few horror stories, but there's always a chance that you may get lucky. i personally picked a roommate last year before signing up and it worked out pretty well.

You;ll be fine of you don't have someone to live with. Most the people did it on my floor and everything worked out fine. My roomate however turned out to be a huge douche bag and so i got screwed. Whatever one quarter left and I will finally be able to escape the dorms. Definately stay on campus as a freshman, and Sierra madre all the way. Super social and very easy to meet people.

Which dorm is for engineers if they choose to be in that type of situation??

CantbeataKTM, what dorms do you live in? I live in santa lucia and ive heard a bunch of my buddies ***** about their assigned roommates. me and my current roommate met on CC last year and decided to room. we're pretty much best friends (i dont mean to say that this is what's going to happen for everyone; it just worked out for us)

Futureholds, i'm not sure if they are changing the red bricks around next year, but right now, the engineering dorm is santa lucia. just check on the housing application pull-down list. i believe it should say on there.

I already know that I'm going to go for Santa Lucia as my first choice and Sierra Madre as the second, I just don't want to put myself in a situation where i lose track of school. Plus, i'm not a drinker/smoker/party animal to any degree, I'm much more of a pool hall regular, and being around other engineering majors should be fun. I am kinda worried about not being happy with my roomate because although I'm really outgoing and social, i don't know anybody at the school as of yet. I'm hoping to meet lots of people at admits day/open house and possibly arranging something then but that's a long shot.

dude.. college is all about experiencing the same thing. i remember thinking the same way last year, but i urge you to go have fun ;)

on a more serious note, if you dont want to go to a party dorm, make your choices red brick. yosemite and sierra madre are both party dorms.
