Is it true that U of C only offers housing to frshmen and upperclass men have to live off campus?

Completely false actually lol.

Upperclassmen actually have the 1st spot in our housing lottery (aka they get first pick on what rooms they want in our housing).

However, the vast majority (basically all but 1 guy I know) of 3rd and 4th years live off campus simply because its soooo much cheaper.

But yeah, if your a first year, you have to stay in housing and most 2nd years choose to stay if they like their house.

The University of Chicago guarantees university housing to any undergraduate who wants it. It requires first-years to live in university housing absent special circumstances. However, the total number of university-housing beds available is only about 55-60% of the total number of undergraduates. So close to half of the undergraduates at any time are living off-campus. But, as fortune3 says, they’re doing it voluntarily (enthusiastically, even), because they get more and nicer space for a lot less money, and not necessarily much farther away from the gyms, libraries, classrooms, etc. than the dorms.
