Housing at UCLA

I looked around on ucla's housing website, and i liked the residential plazas the best.
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/plazas.htm">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/plazas.htm</a></p>

Is it hard to get into a double occupancy/private bath room? And does anyone have suggestions for the best housing opportunities for undergrads?

you don't really get much choice as a freshmen, but since there is quite a bit of housing for next year, it's probably more likely than previous years that you will get your first choice.
That being said, I would recommend the high rises for freshmen. They are much more social and fun to live in, IMO. I'm coming back as a third year to be a SHA next year and I plan to live in Sproul or Dykstra again.

btw, what did you mean by the "best housing opportunities"?

Thanks for the info. I meant the housing that has the best social scene and most comfortable living situations.

Residence Halls have the best social scene, and you will most likely end up in Dykstra, Rieber, or Hedrick, which also happen to be the more social residence halls. they are comfortable living environments... i'd say "adequate" is the word to describe it, since there are even more comfortable living environments in plazas and suites but the social scene is lacking at those.

Sounds good. Res halls dont sound bad, but the plazas still look awsome.

Hedrick and Rieber, are these building completely re-done for Fall of 2005?

Hedrick was just renovated last summer, and Rieber the summer before that...

Rieber isn't getting redone, just getting add-ons: two new buildings, Rieber Vista and Rieber Terrace, with single-room accomodations geared for upper-division students. Residence halls are very social, but I prefer De Neve for its private bathrooms and quietness despite no socializing on my floor whatsoever...

so what I'm getting from this...freshmen should choose halls if they want to meet new people and not be secluded? Plazas and suites look so nice tho! How's life in the plazas besides de neve? They seem closer to all the halls. Maybe a more social atmosphere??? My friend told me that it's sometimes difficult to get suites because they are reserved for athletes and second years. Is this true? I actually wouldn't mind living in the halls in a double...the triples freak me out tho...violation of my personal bubble

No thats not true. Nothing is "reserved" for anyone. But athletes and second years (and third years now over everyone else) get priority over freshmen

How does being Regents help in housing? Do you have a better chance to get into sth you like, even tho freshman?

How far is it from Hutch and Saxon to where the main classes are. ie. walking time/distance. How big is the campus overall?

Hitch is quite far away from the main campus... like an extra 8-minute walk compared to Sproul and Rieber. Saxon isn't as far though.

Im willing to shell out extra cash for it, but what are my chances as an undergrad in getting housing in one of the plazas w/ private bath?

Im from TX and have never been to LA, so I am not familiar at all with the campus, how far are Sproul and Rieber from the area of campus with english, history, library, etc... And where do you eat, are the residential dining halls in each housing area?

"Im from TX and have never been to LA, so I am not familiar at all with the campus, how far are Sproul and Rieber from the area of campus with english, history, library, etc... "

sproul and rieber (and sunset) are the closest to north campus where the social science and humanities majors are located. i'd say... around a 10-15 minute walk? depends how fast you walk i guess.

And where do you eat, are the residential dining halls in each housing area?
sproul is right next to covel commons dining hall, right across from Puzzles and right above bruin care (take out eateries). rieber has its own dining hall, but is a close to covel commons, bruin cafe, and Puzzles since its right across sproul (you just have to walk down the stairs).

all the residence halls are located near some dining hall, that's how ucla's dorm/dining is designed. all the other dining halls are fairly close to each other too, so only a short walk to any dining hall you want

dykstra, de neve: crossroads, de neve
sunset, sproul: covel, bruin cafe, puzzles, rieber
rieber: covel, bruin cafe, puzzles, hedrick, rieber
hedrick, hitch, saxon: rieber, hedrick

im not sure if there's gonna be a new eatery in one of the new halls but i heard they wont be having their own dining hall though.

here check out the map for proximity
<a href="http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/map.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/oncampus/map.htm</a></p>

so we dont get to pick where we live as freshmen coming into UCLA? :'(

you can indicate preference as to whether you want a res hall or some other type of living situation...you don't get to choose your res hall and nothing's guaranteed. I heard Regents will help you get your first choice. A lot of regents scholars end up in De Neve doubles.

oh. wow i thought freshman had guarenteed housing... wells thats stupid if 2nd and 3rd years get priority. as long as i get into residence hall without triple dorms and not far from campus then i think that would be okay...

freshmen have guaranteed housing, just not guaranteed housing CHOICE.

westow, i live in a triple in a res hall, it is certainly adequate. i actually prefer it here.

i dunno kfc4u, i kind of the person that likes privacy. the three beds are not in seperate rooms are they?
