Does anyone know about the availability of offcampus housing for sophs., juniors and seniors? Do you have to have a car to live off-campus? Freshman have dorms, but what about the other three years? Is there a comparable area to SB's Isla Vista?

Uhm, housing around UCSD can be pretty expensive. La Jolla is a nice part of town where renting might not be very convenient. I would definitely say that a car is a necessity. I think people might live in the UTC area though, which might be a bit cheaper than average costs of rent.

UTC?

Is that near the campus?

University Town Center. Yeah its near the campus, and I have heard of students living there. Still, my general impression of the housing prices in La Jolla isn't too favorable, since it, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe make up the most expensive housing regions in the whole county.

There are a lot of nice apartment complexes and rental condos available in the University City area (close to the UTC mall) within 1 to 3 miles from campus. A large number of students live in this area since almost all students move off campus after the first 2 years. Many of these complexes are close enough to easily ride a bike to campus, walk within 30 minutes, or (what most people do) take a campus shuttle to campus. The shuttles stop very frequently in this area.

You don't need a car to live off campus since the housing is so close and it's so well served by campus shuttles and city buses. In this area one can also walk to the mall or take a shuttle to it.

Although the area is nice, it can actually be less expensive than living on campus. For example, a nice 2 br apartment for roughly $1800 per month could be split between 4 students for $450 per month each and you'll also have a living room and kitchen and far more space than a dorm. Some places cost more and some less and some students will choose to have their own br which could cost more.

The bottom line is that UCSD is very convenient for off-campus housing. If you haven't visited and are interested, visit the area around Regents and Nobel and UTC.

another thing to consider not bringing a car off campus is the darn HIGH rates of car thefts/break-ins. you will not believe the number of cars that are broken into these days around campus, it's just ridiculous...i'm afraid to bring my car which i have on campus right now when i move off campus in the fall..
