So I know this is just a bit early...but I'm pretty positive I'll be accepted and I've spent far too long looking at everything on the UNC site. I'm just looking for opinions here. I haven't shared a room since I was 9, and I always hate sharing my bathroom when relatives visit. I definitely want to live on South Campus freshman year, but I want to hear about the pros and cons of the different types of rooms.

I was really looking at the Manning East&West communities because they have the two rooms connected by a bathroom. I figured that would be nice because it's 4 girls to a bathroom. But you have to clean it yourself, which could get complicated and gross with 4 girls, and I don't know if you would get the same type of social experience as in a suite.

On the other hand, I also really like Morrison, which is an 8 person suite. 8 girls for one toilet and 2 showers, and you don't have to clean it yourself. You also might get a better bonding experience with the suitemates because you're all one one hall.

I know it's super early and that freshman don't really have much of a say in housing, but I was just wondering what other people think and what their experiences have been.

When I went to project uplift at UNC I stayed in Connor and the room situation was pretty nice. Connor is a hall connected to one bathroom with eight stalls, four showers, and four sinks. As you can imagine each room was filled on my hall during the event and we were all mature enough to handle the bathroom situation. The bathroom was cleaned daily throughout my two night stay. As far as the bonding situation goes I met so many people even on the halls where the guys slept.

I also have had experience with a suite style dorm and that was for a week. The floor plan consisted of four girls to a bathroom which sat in the middle of the two rooms. In my opinion suite style has more responsibility attached to it. We had to clean our own bathroom because it got too nasty with all the hair in the shower. As far as the social experience goes you do form a close bond your suite mates but in the long run it’s the same as a corridor style dorm. By the way, this was at Tar Heel Girl’s State at Catawba College.

I know your excited, but if you do get in to UNC you won’t be in a suite freshman year. My advice to you is the make the best of it :)

lauriebeth is absolutely right - the majority of freshmen ARE in suites. The description of the four person suites is correct - two rooms are connected to a bathroom, so you have four girls or four guys sharing one bathroom (and you do have to clean it). I actually liked those bathrooms because you have a ton of storage - lots of drawers, etc, so you don’t have to lug a caddy back and forth. You can just leave your stuff in the bathroom.

The Morrison suites are 8 people to one bathroom - only one shower and one toilet. You don’t have to clean the bathroom, so that is a plus. You can’t leave anything in the bathroom, so that is a minus. The Morrison suites are waaay nicer than Hinton James/Craige/Ehringhaus suites even though they are essentially the same design.

Suites in general are a mixed bag. I had a friend live in a 4-person suite, and she and her roommate ended up having major issues with the other two girls. It definitely made the bathroom situation awkward, but that’s life. I lived in an 8-person suite freshman year (the suite with the RA, so really it was only 7 people), and most of the other girls were just not my kind of people (ha). I don’t think one type of suite has a huge social advantage over the other, although you automatically meet more people in a bigger suite.

A colleague whose daughter currently attends Chapel Hill tells me that there’s a dorm known popularly as “the Nerd Dorm.” Does anyone know which dorm this is? Colleague’s daughter’s boyfriend lives there. It sounds perfect for my older son, LOL. :)

^ Cobb is the Honor’s Dorm and houses a good number of kids in the program, so that’s probably the one he was referring to. There are spots for non-honors kids, but it’d be almost impossible to get there freshman year without being in the program, imo.

Ok, so I’ve lived in a corridor style for 4 years and a suite style for the past semester and personally, I HATE suite style. If your main concern is “sharing” then I think you’ll probably be adverse to suite style too. The problem with suite style is that with 7 other people, there are going to be times when you want to use the bathroom/shower/wash your hands/whatever, and it’s going to be occupied. It sounds like no big deal now, but it’s incredibly annoying after a while. Also, you can’t leave your stuff in a UNC cleaned bathroom, so just know that too.

Corridor, on the other hand, means that you can pretty much always shower, use the bathroom, put on makeup in front of the mirror, whatever. Since both bathrooms are essentially the same (no stuff in either bathroom), I don’t really see why you’d ever want a suite style. Plus, IMO, hall style is better for socializing because you constantly run into the 30+ people on your floor, vs. the 7 other people in your suite.

It’s very true that freshmen really don’t get a say in where they live. You do indeed get to fill out a housing form and list your order of choices but in the end, you are just assigned to what’s left…and what’s left for the majority of people are the huge high rises (that haven’t been remodeled) on South Campus: Hinton James, Ehringhaus, Craige…as well as a few spots in some North Campus dorms. We walked the entire campus with D and she picked out her top choices for dorms based on that and the style/amenities/location etc. Her top choices ended up being the Manning buildings and Morrison…but she was assigned to Hinton James. We know no freshman who got any of their top picks…although I’m sure there are exceptions.

That said, D is perfectly happy in Hinton James. She’s in an 8-person suite with one bathroom and it works fine for her.

Thanks guys! I think I definitely would want to go with an 8 person suite…figuring out who would clean what in the bathroom and when with 4 girls doesn’t really sound fun. Although if I get into the honors program (fingers crossed!) I’ll definitely look at Cobb. But corridor style just never really appealed to me, especially after staying with some friends at App for a weekend. The bathroom was really dark and the showers were disgusting. But that might’ve just been App. How are the rooms and bathrooms of most of the north and mid campus dorms?

“that might have been just App”…lol. I think you need to visit almost every campus in the nation to acknowledge that freshmen dorms for the most part ARE disgusting. UNC dorms are old (ancient in fact) and they might not be as great as you may expect them to me. If you ever went to State, then you probably have seen UNC dorms altogether (albeit some nice dorms like morrison).

ArtemisDea’s reasons for hating a suite are pretty much spot on. Nothing will give you inner rage like - having to share a sink, having someone “beat” you to the shower, having someone’s boyfriend sleep over and LOCK the bathroom door for an hour so he can take a shower, having one of the girls LOCK the bathroom door in the morning when 3 other people need to take showers, having your suitemates “keep tabs” on you every time you enter or leave the suite… the list goes on and on. Living in a suite will teach you tolerance, if nothing else… ; -)

Generally, I think the Middle and North campus dorms are a lot nicer than South Campus dorms (rooms and bathrooms included). After living on a hall in a North Campus dorm for the past three years, I could never go back to suite-style or South Campus, but that was an experience I think every freshman should probably have. Also, after living on South Campus for a year and having to factor in 15-20 minutes of walking time or the bus schedule when you wanted to go anywhere, North Campus will be beyond appealing.

I’m an OOS freshman and definitely did NOT get my first choice of dorms. I don’t know anyone who did. I ended up in Craige, which is supposedly the worst of all the high rises, but it has been fine. It is old and now I have seen the other better dorms (haha), but it is ok here. Walking to class is fine (you can also take the bus) and sharing with 7 other girls has even been ok. The room is really (!!) small, but we have made it work. I am not living on South Campus next year, but some of my friends are planning on moving into Morrison for sophmore year and staying on south. I have made tons of other freshman friends this year, so that is the best thing to come out of spending a year way down on south campus!!

I live in Koury, which is in Manning East and I really like it. Although, I didn’t get in here through the lottery, I’m in the Carolina Experience LLC. While I REALLY, really like my suitemates I ended up with & all of the people in the LLC, I don’t really know if it’s something I’d recommend. That being said, I really like the set up of the suites in Manning East & West, as opposed to the ones in the high rises. We have to clean our bathrooms, but we set up a schedule and it ended up being nicer, since we can leave all our stuff in the bathroom.

Go to a foreign college if you don’t like sharing – in most countries, students do not share dorm rooms. Shared bathrooms are very common though.

My son is a freshman, he got Horton - which was his first choice. (I think technically it was Manning East, which is made up of Horton and one other dorm? right?)
