I just got my housing offer from the residence colleges I've applied:

General Application: Copeley3 single room ( 7070/year...expensive :(( )
Hereford College: double room
IRC: waitlisted (number 7 on the waitlist, result not known until June 26th)

I would like to live in a single but as you can see, that is very expensive and as far as I know, copeley is very far from central ground. Can somebody tell me how long will it take from copeley to central grounds by bus? Is that convenient to take the bus to go to class in UVA? I'm also concerned about the dining place, is there a dining place near copeley?

I have to make the housing decision before June 19th, which housing offer should I choose? Anyone please give me some advice. I really appreciate your help!!!

7070 for Copeley? You’re getting scammed by UVA then… You’re paying almost 800 dollars a month to live in a place no one wants to live? You could probably find a much cheaper apartment for that. I’m talking about 6k for a year, as opposed to 7k for ~9 months.

You won’t find a single anywhere near grounds for less than $800/mo. My single near Target was $800/mo (yes, 20 mins north of town) and now rents for $950. A single on JPA is hundreds above that. Plus I had another chunk of change for utilities. It’s actually not a scam.

I think it depends on how much you want a single with a 20 minute bus ride versus a double with a 10 minute bus ride. If you got into IRC that would be the best choice.

Oh, I thought he wanted a single room, like an apartment with other people. It’s basically the same thing, you just share a common living room/kitchen area with people. Usually you have your own bathroom. I know people who have singles on JPA for 540-600. If you take over someone elses lease, it becomes that cheap.

hazelorb and plue00, thanks alot for your advice:)

hazelorb, why will IRC be the best choice? Do you mean it is closer to the central grounds? Mmm, I would like a single room with my own bathroom. Do you think I will get a single in IRC? I haven’t thought about living off grounds since I think living on grounds will be some help for my first year in the university.

By the way…big problem: where should I go eat if I live in copeley?

i lived in copeley the fall semester of my second year and i lived in the irc the spring semester of my second year, and let me tell you, living in copeley is no walk in the park. first off, there are no dining areas near it besides barracks. i spent a lot of money buying food because dining hall food was too far away. living in copeley is not cheap. second off, it’s really hard to schedule evening classes (and if you’re premed, sometimes you have to do this) because it can feel a bit spooky heading back home (even when taking the bus). walking to classes takes a good 45 minutes and you have to wake up pretty early just to catch the bus for early classes. i think that you should wait to see what the results are for the irc (usually, most tend to get in from the waitlist from my experience) and accept that offer. i love the irc a lot; great atmosphere, the study rooms are nice, there’s the breakfast of champions every wednesday, and classes/dining halls are really close. it’s like a huge melting pot.

azarap, thank you so much for your reply, do you think I will have chance to get a single in IRC? Since June 19 is the deadline to accept offer and IRC result will not be avaliable until June 26th, should I accept the copeley offer first and then apply to change it?

If you really want a single over everything else, then accept Copeley. IRC does have singles, but not with your own bathroom. Well, there are some, but I’m not sure if you could get one from the waitlist. It’s too bad Hereford didn’t give you a single.

as hazelorb said, how badly do you want a single? i would accept copeley and wait to see if you get off of the waitlist. also, you can always email the irc housing division to ask for advice in this situation. i think that once you pay your $100, the money from copeley transfers over to irc if you get in off the waitlist. but, again, just to be sure, email irc to ensure that the transfer will occur. also, if you do not get off the waitlist, then spend your first semester at copeley. you can always transfer to the irc second semester (if you are an upperclassmen). the irc has plenty of singles that are not occupied when people go to study abroad. i can give you hope and say that most my friends who were waitlisted for irc did eventually get in.

hazelorb and azarap, thanks a alot for the reply!

azarap ,it’s good to know that your friends get into IRC, do you think I will have a chance to get a single in IRC?

hazelorb, yup, I just want a single, but I don’t really care about whether I will get a private bathroom… maybe I should also email Hereford to see whether I can change to a single there?
