housing deposit... refundable???

so i heard someone say that we could make our deposit for housing without accepting the offer of admission (i got accepted ea by the way). is this true? because i want to make sure that I get the dorms that i want but i do not want to commit just yet because i want to know how RD goes.. can anyone confirm this? this could help aLOT

The PSAC person who called me the other day said it was recommended we do this, and it's fully refundable.

I'd still search around, but it seems legit.

I believe (not 100% sure) it is refundable as long as you let them know of your plans before May 1st. So you should be able to get housing priority and still wait for other schools. If you leave your deposit at Chicago after May 1st but deposit at another school, you are "double depositing," an activity that is frowned upon.

Every school experiences "summer melt" where some students who send a deposit and accept the admissions offer gets into a first choice school off a wait list (or for other reasons). This is not considered binding as is ED. As to how refundable the deposit is after May 1, I do not know.

I think this has changed from last year In previous year one could put down the housing deposit without committing to attend and get it refunded if you decided not to attend Chicago (but one had to request the refund by 5/1). I remember seeing something recently that indicated that this year, putting down your housing deposit = accepting admission.

Unalove, where are you?!?! I will try to find the link, but I suspect it may be in the Accepted Student section where only you lucky ones can go...so check your admissions materials.

Edit -- Found this from Gracello in a December 2008 post:

Although in the past you were able to get your deposit refunded, beginning this year that is no longer an option. So, once you send in your deposit, that becomes your commitment to attending the University.
There are plenty of good options in housing, and I would encourage you to wait until you have heard from other schools before sending in your deposit. Most if not all dormitories will still have space if you wait until the priority deadline for EA acceptees for housing forms (April 15th, I believe), which is after you will have heard back from other schools.

I emailed the University a few weeks ago with some questions. She initially told me that to get my first choice of housing I should send in my deposit ASAP and that I could change my mind. I had seen the bit about the deposit being non-refundable so I followed up. I received the following:

"I have double checked with the Office of College Admissions, and they have confirmed that if you contact them in writing by May 1st to withdraw your acceptance and request that your refund be returned to you, they will do so."

There seems to be some varying response for this question. Has anyone called the admissions office personally?

kimcpm,
have you got the answer to your question regarding housing deposit w/o accepting the offer of admission? I want to do the same.
