To those who have been to UNC, I have a question. Are there any dorms that should be avoided? I have one friend who says to avoid Hinton James, but refuses to say why.... Just curious if there are any really sub-par ones to not get.

None are really sub-par. HoJo is the most distant dorm from the academic buildings. It is also almost exclusively first-years and has a reputation for being a bit rowdy. That is probably what your friend was concerned about.

Honestly, as an incoming first-year you really don’t have much influence on your dorm assignment. You will most likely end up on south campus and in a suite-style dorm. Which is not so bad from a social perspective. Everyone around you is new on campus and looking to make new friends.

Avoid Craige. The building’s just really bad. Also avoid Hardin. It’s quiet (so no freshman experience) and it’s far from classes, so 2 things you don’t want.

Craige was just remodeled over the summer of 2012. Hardin is all female.

Oh. It wasn’t all female when I lived there 3 years ago. And Craige is still pretty bad (I was there a few weeks ago for break housing), it must have been ridiculous before the remodeling.

They spent a couple of million dollars. Here is what they did (with pics) …

[Summer 2012 Room Remodeling Project | UNC Chapel Hill Housing and Residential Education](http://housing.unc.edu/residence-halls/remodel-2012)

Horton, Craige North, Koury, Morrison, Craige, EHouse are your best bet (in that order)

Horton, Craige north, and koury are suites but only 4 people for a bathroom. You have to clean it. Rooms are a lot nicer, and a little bigger. Hardin is an all girls dorm that is also like this style. I believe horton is an Honors dorm next year however…

Craige just got remolded so its a good pick. Morrison is sophomores only and eHouse just got remodeled as well, but unlike Craige, didn’t get new bathrooms

I wish someone told me all that ^ before I came.

Choose wisely. Avoid Hojo.

What about Granville Towers? my mom is making me choose RIGHT NOW.

If you are going to join a frat/sorority I would do granville. IF not then definitely south campus.

Even if you join a frat or sorority I would still consider south campus. It’s like its own community. Only downside is the walk to classes

Granville bundles it’s own meal plan with the room rate. Seems to me to be somewhat restrictive. Certainly will separate you from the majority of the first years (room and meals).

When I was a freshman I was told that if you go for Granville and then want to move on-campus later, you’re put on the lowest priority (right above incoming first-years). I’m not sure if they still have that policy (email or call housing), but if they do you’ll probably want to avoid Granville.

You’re asked to pick five dorms that you’d like to live in. At last years orientation I believe they said that more than 60% of students didn’t get into any on their list, so have an open mind.
