housing-dorms ?

Any tips on what dorms are best?

Are housing requests favored by the date the applicant sends back the deposit? or are they all done at the same time?

thanks

Resident Staff assigns you housing. The best freshmen dorms are Yates, Dupont and Barrett (if you're a male, you can live there starting next year since it's becoming co-ed). You will be given priority to these dorms if you have any types of allergies and need an AC.

you can look at the dorms at http://www.wm.edu/reslife/residenceHalls/freshmen.php

Dupont and Yates are the best freshmen dorms, though they are farther away from classes. They both have AC. Dupont has 2 rooms sharing a bathroom, and Yates has hall bathrooms.

Barrett has the best location of the freshmen dorms, I believe, and males will be allowed to live there starting this fall. Barrett does not have AC.

... 2 floors of jefferson will be freshmen next year too.

I live in Taliaferro now, with only 50 other people. Rooms are small, no AC, but it's good.

You can request a dorm, through email or whatever. I didn't. Some of my friends did though, and each one who asked got what they wanted, but they don't promiss to honor requests.

do you know how they requested? it'd help out a lot if you know

The one benefit to Yates is its proximity to the paths, which make it a little bit more convienent

Is Monroe Hall nice?

soccerguy, I've heard that Yates is a real party dorm. True?

well a small update: jefferson is all upperclass again, so no freshmen there next year.

Apparently you can rank dorms this year? I assume they try to give you what they want as best they can. You couldn't rank when I came in.

Monroe Hall is pretty nice, no AC. Right across from Wawa =P

I don't think you can claim that a certain dorm is a party dorm, because the people who live there each year are completely different. It does have AC and good sized rooms, which is nice. You will probably find people in every dorm who like to hose their own room parties.

No matter which dorm you end up in you can request to bring a window unit air conditioner, right?

I'd be surprised if it's already equipped with AC. I've never seen a unit in an air-conditioned dorm

If your dorm doesn't have AC, I think you have to have allergies to get an AC unit (or a nice doctor who will say you have allergies so you can get one).

You need to have a form filled out saying you have "allergies" and the school has to approve it. The school approves all requests basically and it doesn't take much to prove you have "allergies". Even then, no one checks to see if you have a waiver on file, so its likely that you won't get caught in any event.

yea I assume you could bring your own, even though technically I don't think that's allowed. I was gonna do it if I didn't get AC this year. It was also a lot cooler this spring than last spring. 55 degrees and the only thing I can do in my room is open the window or turn on the AC. No way to make it warmer, heh.

soccerguy, I called w&m about sheets for the xl dorm mattresses and they gave me the dimentions 36x80. Is that correct? I cannot find sheets that size anywhere. Also, they could not tell me the depth of the mattress. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.

TJED: We purchased regular size sheets and they were just fine. This was in Barrett. I was concerned that putting regular size sheets over an egg crate pad and regular mattress pad would be a problem but it was fine. You can find XL sheets at so many places: Target, Penney's, etc so if you want them they are out there but not necessary. As I recall the school received MANY phone calls about this topic and put a message on the website about the topic.
