How probable do you think I would qualify for a housing exemption? I live in Riverside (40 miles away/ 50 minutes no traffic) My parents have a household income of 100k+. They would be paying my tuition out of pocket which is already expensive because I would be paying out of state tuition (we recently relocated to riverside). What should I do? My parents can and will pay for my tuition but not for my housing. Should I take out a loan to dorm or should I just commute? But I’m not too excited to be driving an hour plus traffic. If I don’t dorm, will I be missing out? I know CPP is a commuter school.
Are you a rising Senior, or a freshman who will be starting college in the next week or two?
If it’s the first, do you have a part time job? Can you work enough hours in the next year to cover room and board? How long until you have CA residency… would a gap year be a decent idea?
If you’re committed to attending, what was the plan when you accepted?
It sounds as though this is at least as much about “missing out/ not wanting to commute” as finances.
I’m absolutely NOT your best resource here, but it doesn’t sound to me as though your parent’s income level is low enough that the school will pick up the tab for your room and board.
I’m a freshman that will be starting in late September. I don’t have a job yet but will get one once settled in. If all goes well, I should have my CA residency this time next year. I have considered a gap year but my parents are strongly against it. The dorms here are 14k+ and I’m worried that i won’t be able to pay for it even with a part time job. I’m considering taking out a private loan for my room and board. Are private loans just a bad idea in general? Are they worth it? That would be my only plan if my exemption gets rejected. I still want to go to CPP but I am hesitant if I have to pay so much for housing.
Why not plan to commute this year, then board next? 40 miles isn’t insurmountable; I have friends who drive that far to work every day… frequently in snow.
Might sound silly but I feel as if I would be able to integrate into the college community easier if I formed this year. I relocated from across the country and I don’t know anyone In CA. I think forming would make it easier to meet people and form relationships. From what I’ve heard, its hard to interact with other people at CPP if you don’t live on campus considering there is a Freshman dorming requirement to get rid of that “commuter school status”. I didn’t even know there was a freshman housing requirement until recently. My dad is a graduate of CPP and so is my cousin (2012). When she went to CPP, there was no such requirement.
