I know that housing is first come, first serve. Does this mean from the time the student applies for housing or from the time he or she selects Accepts admission on the portal?

My daughter isn’t available right now to log in. She also is under the impression it’s from the time she applies for housing on Feb. 23 and not when she accepts admission. If that’s true then I won’t be concerned.

Or maybe it’s from the time they receive our deposit? Is that sent via a credit card online or a check in the mail?

I am just curious. Is the housing that bad that we have to rush to sign up on the 1st day available? What’s the percentage they can accommodate on-campus for freshmen each year?

From our ED experience. It is first come, first serve from the time you make the $800 housing deposit. Neither admission acceptance or even housing preference submission matters. The $ are what get you in the queue. You can do this online.

Watermark, I was wondering about this, too. I was looking at some older posts from the recent past (it could have been a couple years ago, though.) Some were saying that housing filled up very quickly. And, there were a few who were scrambling for off-campus housing as freshmen. It also says on Cal Poly’s current website to apply for housing as soon as you can as it isn’t guaranteed. So, not sure what all that means.

First come, first served begins when you apply for housing. Suffice it to say everything will be null if you fail to pay the initial deposit and/or accept admission to the university. With the new Poly Canyon apartment complex fully operational, there should be enough housing to accommodate everyone who wants to live on-campus. However, the dorms fill up fairly quick.

To clarify 08alum’s comment. You can apply for housing online. But until you make the deposit your place in the housing queue is not established. So make sure you have a credit card ready for the $820 deposit when you logon Feb 23.

I assume we don’t have to wait until Feb. 23 to have our credit card charged. We plan to do that today. So on the 23rd all she needs to do is apply for housing. Does this sound right?

When we did the housing registration in January, the housing portal became available for login on the specified day. She selected her top 3 housing preferences and then there was a section to make a deposit. I don’t know how you would pay the deposit in advance, but perhaps that can be done.
