Would you reccommend halls or plazas for first years? Ive seen them both and residence halls struck me as somewhat dirty while plazas seemed clean. However, the halls also seemed more social than the plazas, making it a big plus. anyone have input on this?

it seems like most freshman will end up in halls anyway, and it'll probably also be in triples. im going to be a freshman next year and halls is definitely first on my list, because it is a lot more social.

No, I don't think that's true. I think most will be in doubles. Especially with all the new dorms going up, there are a lot of beds available.

Actually, most first years WILL be in triples because Sproul will be closed for renovations. You have to also keep in mind that more second and third year students are returning to housing next year which takes away more bed space.

Y'know...when I was there, even without two brand new buildings, there were few triples...But the third year students do take away beds.

I'm still betting more doubles than triples, but I'd have to ask a friend who works for OCH or Housing and find out.

Actually I've been giving housing tours and we were specifically told at "training" by the housing director, that this coming year most of the first years will be in triples.

Well, that's that.

Damn, I'm sure glad I'm not living on-campus now... poor freshies.

yeah just about all freshmen will be in triples

also, i dont know about the statistic that more will be in res halls. with sproul closing, there is considerbly more plaza rooms available than res halls. so i imagine it will be split along t he middle since while freshmen tend to go to res halls, many will have to get plazas.

Namaste,

So the triples situation isn't going to severely minimize chances of getting a plaza for first years? It's just going to be very likely that we will end up with triples in a plaza rather than a doubles in a plaza? (If we rank plazas above residence halls in our housing applications)?

yes, most first years will def. get triples because EVERY single double has been taken up by all the returning people. also, more than ever, are more people returning because we just started offering housing for 4 years. also, sproul closed and yes, rieber terrace is going to open, but the normal size of sproul held way more than terrace does because terrace has way bigger rooms. i hope that made sense.

yes, i heard from housing office there are something like 2800 res halls spots and 4500 plaza spots. and i also heard that if you are a freshmen, put plaza first, and are willing to pay, you will get it. but they will all be triples.

i dont see why people say plazas are less social, they look the same as res halls.

i'm rooming with a friend. we both will have honors status. she has a regents scholarship, i have an alumni one. does the housing priority status deal apply to us first years? if we request each other, will we still get a triple?

yea you will. honors and stuff has really nothing to do with housing.

honors and regents helps

I think being a Regents Scholar does help with getting preferred housing.
Don't know about being an Alumni Scholar, though...

This one paper from AAP day states 60% of frosh will be in a triple.

i'm willing to bet that number is actually a lot higher.
