Housing for Freshmen

I was recently admitted to Columbia, but am deciding between Uchicago and Columbia and will not decide until the third week of April most likely. If i submit my deposit on May 2, will I be at a disadvantage for housing? I heard that housing is not guaranteed for freshmen

i have never heard of freshmen not getting guaranteed housing. you will certainly not be at a disadvantage for housing. in fact, many students here who want to commute are required to live on campus their first year.

Housing is guaranteed. If you submit your housing application after the deadline, then you might be less likely to get your first choice of housing.

Housing is absolutely guaranteed all four years here.

Im thinking about where to live, and I would like to make close friends in my dorm, preferably live with a roommate, and consider myself as a social person who would like to go out and/or party on Friday or Saturday night (after all my work is done, of course). What dorm would be best suited for me?

What are the differences among the different dorms? Is there a condensed site I can find this?

there’s tons of info all over this forum, just do a search.
not that it’s helped me make a decision, but still… =D

you might find this website helpful: [Housing : FIRST-Year Students](<a href=“Columbia Housing”>Columbia Housing)

you can click on each of the first-year dorms to learn more about them.

I lived in Carman my freshman year and loved it. Some of my closest friends are still the ones I met on that floor

Do people typically live in the dorms all four years?

If not, isn’t is super expensive to afford an apartment in Manhattan?

Do students need to move out of the dorm during summer break ?
How much does it cost for Columbia decision deposit on 5/1 ? Thanks.

Students typically live in dorms for all four years. New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world making it virtually impossible for most Columbia people to do otherwise.

A few upperclassmen live in off-campus housing, and if you get a bunch of roommates, it’s not significantly more expensive than living in Columbia housing, but even so, the vast majority of students live in Columbia housing all four years. Only first year dorms are “on campus” though; the rest are just around in Morningside Heights. Yes, students have to move out of the dorms for summer break, unless they pay for summer housing. A decent breakdown on the dorms can be found at WikiCU: [url=<a href=“http://www.wikicu.com/First_year_housing]First”>First year housing - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia]First year housing - WikiCU, the Columbia University wiki encyclopedia/url, and Bwog: [url=<a href=“http://bwog.com/2007/08/28/first-year-dorms-a-play-by-play/]Bwog”>First-Year Dorms: A Play by Play - Bwog]Bwog First-Year Dorms: A Play by Play/url.
