Housing for Freshmen

We didn’t expect too much that my son would get admitted and we didn’t really a lot of research on SDSU. But he got admitted today, so now we have to learn a lot of info on SDSU. As of now, we’re choosing between SDSU or CPP

I’ll start with housing.

  1. Has it been confirmed that SDSU will be in-person for Fall 2021? or still pending?
Accdg to this link, for Fall 2021, the freshmen residency requirement will be reinstated?

  2. I also see that there’s 7 different choices for Freshman housing? wow 7 really?
Chapultepec, Tenochca, Huaxyacac, University Towers, Maya Olmeca, Zura, South Campus Plaza.
What are the key differences? Is it the student who makes the choice, or is it the school who will assign?
Which one is best for Comp Sci students?

We will be doing the virtual tours/webinars soon.
Thank you in advance! Without this CC forum, I don’t think we can survive all this college application/decision process.

Also the housing application opened on March 1st. Is the housing assignments prioritized based on application date? Can we submit housing application even before we accept admission?

The Intent to Enroll fee must be submitted prior to completing the housing application.

Housing is not on a first come basis since the application will not be looked at until after May 1, but if SDSU is the top choice, it is always better to enroll and pay the housing deposit early.

The housing situation is ever changing so I would contact the Housing office for the latest update about in-person classes and residential housing.

This has been several years ago and hopefully CC posters with more recent experience with the housing options can chime in.

The majority of the housing is on the East side of campus with exceptions of Huaxyacac and Chapltepec which are on the west side of campus. For a CS major, I would recommend the East side housing since the GMCS building is on the east side of campus where several CS classes will be held. Also most of the food places are on the East side of campus.

Olmeca where my son resided Freshman year and Maya are the original brick dorms have undergone recent renovation along with these other dorm buildings: Tenocha and Zura.

Students select Single, Double, Triple etc and can select a Living Learning Community or not. There is no specific LLC for CS but some select the Engineering Theme community. You will rank your preferences on the application and you are not guaranteed a specific dorm or LLC/Theme. SDSU housing ultimately makes the determination.

My son selected a few LLC’s including Engineering and METS but ended up in the Emerging Leaders LLC and his roommate happened to be an ME major and they had a double in Olmeca. It looks like Olmeca is all triples now.

The LLC locations do change from year to year depending upon the # of students, but Zura has been housing the Honors college for several years.

Check this link to see the explanation of options on the application. https://housing.sdsu.edu/campus_living/fresh_app_instructions.aspx

Thanks for posting this! We’ve got a lot to learn about SDSU as well. S21 was accepted Dec (for Business Finance). We are waiting on other decisions but are thrilled that SDSU accepted him and is a fantastic option!! We are visiting the campus in early April since he hasn’t visited it yet (we live in Nor Cal)

Thank you everyone!
I’ll respond with more questions later.

Just fyi, for CPP, they allowed to submit housing application even before accepting offer. And the housing application fee is refundable as long as the cancellation is submitted 45 days before start of school. I think this is a special Covid-related cancellation rule, although they allow any type reason for cancellation.
So we have submitted housing application to CPP around Feb24 (or whenever the first day that they opened housing app for freshmen).

So I get it now that each school has different rules.
